I am trying to fix a computer that was given to me with a hanging problem.
It is an A7V133-VM board with an AMD AthalonXP 1600+ processor (1.4Ghz,
266Mhz). Currently running bios version 1008. It will run through the
intial startup and then hang. When I restart the computer, the bios comes
on and in red letters on the right hand side tells me that the CPU frequency
is incorrect. Currently it is user defined as 133Mhz. I feel that it
should be set at 266Mhz, however that is not an option that I am given.
What am I missing, a multiplier, jumper setting? Any help would be most
appreciated.

Thanks, Jo

thanks, i really appreciate it. also, if you could tell me where to find the
multiplier....please don't laugh, I would appreciate that too!

It's possible that the bios is incorrect or needs to be re-flashed.
You didn't mention what it was that caused the system to hang in the
first place. I'm assuming that it was given to you because it wasn't
working to begin with. Any history might be helpful.

I don't think your issue has anything to do with FSB speed.
It might be the power supply isn't up to the task. Even if it was
working at one time, they do wear out eventually.

If it passes boot, that would indicate that the mainboard, processor,
memory and video are working at least well enough. If it's hanging
after that point then you're probably looking at either a hard drive
or OS issue. Make sure the hard drives are properly defined (they
likely auto-detect) in bios. Look/listen for disk activity after boot.
Also check that it's not trying to boot from a floppy or CD-ROM that
isn't there. Do you have a floppy or CD-ROM that you can try to boot
from?

If the drives seem alright then You should try to reinstall the OS.

I'll get home at 6:00 CST, I'll email you as I'm not sure if I can access
this newsgroup with my home ISP.
