I've seen lots of posts about A7V-e lockups, usually with Duron CPU
and GeForce2 video card. Some people even suggested that it had
something to do with the video card.

Has anybody figured why it's happening ? I did not see any post about
someone who actually succeded to cure this problem.

Or maybe it's just a buggy motherboard ?

Lockups were a problem with a few A7V boards I have owned. In both cases the
lockups were solved by not using PCI slots 1 & 5 and by using a good
quality power supply. I was using a Socket A Athlon 850-1200 T-Bird and
Geforce2 GTS card at the time.

Interesting. Power supply was the first on my suspect list. The
question is, however, how to chose a good one. Mine has pretty descent
specs...

BTW, did you ever had a problem booting ? In addition to these lockups
I have a strange problem - sometimes the system won't boot. HW is not
being initialized, speaker does not beep which probably means that the
board failed to get to it's most basic test.

Yes. At the time, toggling the power supply switch on and off seemed to
solve the problem for the short term.

Antec is one of the best power supplies going. Enermax and Sparkle/Fortron
Source are two other good names. Expect to pay $60-70USD for a good quality
400W unit. It's money well spent as the power supply will last through
several upgrades, at minimum.

What operating system are you using on the machine in question ?

Mostly Linux. Why ? I don't think it matters, as far as lockups are
concerned (I'm pretty sure it's not a software problem).

Initially, the problems I had seemed to be related to IRQ steering in
Windows 98SE and ME. Upgrading to Windows 2000 Pro greatly reduced the
instances of lockups.

At any rate, the problem was solved by not using PCI slots 1 & 5, upgrading
the PSU, and using Win2K as the OS.
