I'm building a system and hesitating between a WD Caviar ATA 120 (ATA
100) and the WD SATA 120 (ATA 150). The SATA is only about $25 more,
but I'm not sure that it's the right choice--new technology, new
drivers, compatibity with windows. (I'm running win2k, but may migrate
to win xp). Any comments?

| Probably the same drive, won't be much in terms of performance. I think
WD
| use a PATA to SATA convertor chip on the drive.
|
| If anything the PATA one will probably be faster since it's not got to
| convert between two protocols, and the IDE is built into the nVidia chips,
| rather than having to traverse the PCI bus as well.
|
| What are the model numbers of the drives? If they have the same seek and
| transfer rates, they're probably the same mechanism.
|
| Only thing to consider is, do you want to be able to RAID the drive? Even
| if you do, you can go buy yourself an adapter.

It will depend on how you use the drive (usage patterns). Overall, even
with the conversion, the SATA will inch out slightly better performance.

Does the standard A7N8X have a serial ATA controller? The Deluxe model does
but the standard does not, methinks.
