My computer based on the above Mainboard has worked flawlessly for
months. Today I turned it on and it won't boot. I get the single passed
POST beep followed by a short jingle every 10 secs. I get the post
screen displayed for about 1 min then the screen goes blank. I was under
the impression that my MB had a speech code system which announces what
the problem is. Anyone know whats wrong?

Regards

Yes I do, Why? is there a known issue?
I have just pulled the power cord from my 200Gb Maxtor HD, now the
computer boots with a dos disk normally! Has My maxtor failed? If so why
is it stopping the computer from booting to a floppy?

Regards

It almost sounds as if the HD is placing a big drain on the power supply. Is
your power supply undersized or causing you any other problems?

ONLY if you use onboard sound then you should hear the "voice"
It has to come through speakers plugged into onboard sound

The beeps that you are hearing (like a mobile phone ring) are actually
coming from the HDD itself and not the motherboard. Listen carefully to the
drive when it beeps to make sure.

It does this funny sounds because the head is stuck and the actuator is
trying to free it by pulsing the actuator and therefore releasing the head
but this is not working for some reason. Try knocking the drive sharply
with the power off and try again, also try doing it with the power on and it
might come free.

If it does come free, back it up immediately and RMA the drive before it
packs up completely. This is a fairly common problem.

Let me know how you get on.

Why "fix" it then send it back? If you're gonna send it back, do it with it
in the clicky state, surely.

Thats very intresting about the maxtors -I can look out for that, and neat
quickfix.

Ben, not sure if I should mention this, but it seems it couldnt really
matter if the drive is faulting or not for rmaing, due to an effect of
postage >:}

What, you mean when they drop kick your parcel across the distribution
centre? Yeah, that should do it :-)

Thanks for the tips! I will give it a sharp knock. The gingle sounds
like it is coming from a tiny speaker! I have filled in maxtors fault
form and am waiting with interest! I am not able to use their diagnostic
software since the computer won't even boot 'dos' from a floppy while
the drive is powered up.

Oh, and the power supply is quite new, an enermax 430W model, It cost
more than the case, so I hope its powerful enough!

Peter,

I have a SCSI disc drive in this state - it will spin up sometimes. Is it
feasible to repair it? Or should I just give it a thump each time it fails
to start?

I suspect it would boot from floppy or cd if you change the boot order,
and/or disable udma, or SMART.

Have swapped it for another HD, computer now works normally. Am now

suggestions, I have learned allot

If it was a new drive, I would just RMA it. It is worth a try just in case
as some people have files that need to be backed up first. This is why it
is essential to back up important files away from the computer in case
anything like this happens.
