A7N8X hard to start

Who's got an A7N8X that's hard to start? Mine needs between 1 and 4 presses
of the reset button from a cold boot - initial power on gives drive lights
and fans, but no beep and no video. Once running it's fine.

I'm curious because I'm now on my second one that's doing it, the first was
a 1.04 Deluxe, this one's a -E. The 1.04 died after about 18 months,
just failed to power up one day, so every day I've got a deja voux feeling
that this one's going to go the same way.

In between the two boards, I did a quite a bit of component juggling to the
extent that the only component common to the two boards is the graphics
card, a two year old 9700 Pro (Crucial).

Anyone else with a similar problem, or better still a solution?

Thanks
Martin

No problem with my son's A7N8X, however, I have run into this with a
variety of other boards. Have you tried underclocking it to see how
it behaves? In many of the systems I have seen that exhibit this
"feature" the problem goes away when the FSB is dropped below spec, or
returned to spec if set to overclock. It is usally indicative of a
marginal component in the system: cpu, memory, or even in the
power/filter/regulator components embedded on the motherboard. I am
assuming your power supply is ample and that you have eliminated that
as a potential problem. Unfortunately, I have no simple solution to
offer you...

How about telling us what your using for a power supply and what peripheals you
have in your system.??

Like I said, the only thing common between the two systems is the Graphics
Card, the rest is standard stuff:

1.04
Antec TruePower 430W (A suspect)
XP2500+ @ 1.83 (wouldn't oc)
1 x 512MB Crucial
9700 Pro

-E
Aopen PS (can't remember, about 400W)
XP2500+ @ 2.19 (different CPU)
2 x 512MB Crucial (have tried both idividually)
9700 Pro
Various optical drives and IDE harddrives

So nothing out of the ordinary, BTW, all the original components were on an
Abit NF7 for a few months after the first mobo failure, with no probs. It
certainly seems like a power problem, the NF7 has that extra square
connector feeding power to the system, does the A7N8X suffer from not having
that??

Thanks

No joy here - have the same issues with the 8X and the -E. "thought" it
might be the momentary contact switch but just when I decided to replace it,
the system hasn't failed to start since <G>. Tried a 400W and a 350W PS with
same result. Disconnected all perips - same, but for whatever reason the
gods of computing have decided that all is OK for almost two weeks. I'm one
of these who power down the system nightly.

One thing I noticed, FWIW, completely removing the power cord from the
system for a few seconds and then reconnecting it sometimes helped. Almost
seemed as if the power cord was plugged in and the boot failed, that some
relay was stuck and pressing the on button had no effect whatsoever. Unplug
and replug and retry would at least give the fans an PS a "shot" of
movement.

So far fingers, eyes and legs are being kept crossed.

I had one that did this. Changed just about everything (including PSU),
and it still did it. In desperation, I switched to a much cheaper 'noname'
PSU, and lo-and-behold, it worked fine!. The PSU's that didn't work
reliably with the A7N8X, both ran fine on other systems.
I suspect the timing of the 'power good' signal is particularly critical
on this board, and for some reason, causes problems with some quite well
known supplies (the two I tried, were a large Antec, and an Enermax)....

Mine took 10 - 20 presses or more to start. Had a fairly new Enermax power
supply, so I ignored that possibility and messed with things for weeks,
then finally broke down and bought an Antec 420 watt power supply. Started
instantly first time.

I appreciate the various suggestions, but I guess no 'magic bullet', I may
try another PS even though I've had the problem with two different ones so
far. Funny thing is, the night I wrote the OP I was hacked off because it
took 4 resets, since then? You guessed it, first time every time, and
that's what make's it difficult, after changing PS or whatever you may have
to wait weeks to be sure you've fixed the problem (or not).

Thanks
Martin

With a 350w psu I usually had to press twice to start mine, sometimes
it needed three presses. Just installed 420w Yesico psu and I can
start it from the MS wireless keyboard for the first time!
