I just put this machiine together it has a 80 gig diamond Maxtor HD. In the
bios it see's the drive correctly. When I went to fdisk to partition the
drive it only see's 10gb. I made the active drive 10gb, now I have 10gb and
70gb. This is not exactly the ratio I would want. Has anybody else seen
this problem? Is a bios upgrade needed? and if so which one will solve this
problem?

thanks

What are you using as Fdisk? Possibly an old Win 98 boot disk? If that's the
case, you need a newer tool for drives > 64 Gig, or go to the Microsoft site
and find the Win 98 Fdisk patch.

http://www.microsoft.com/
search for
263044USA8.exe

information:
263044 - Fdisk Does Not Recognize Full Size of Hard Disks
Larger than 64 GB
http:// support.microsoft.com / default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B263044

Something you said triggered my mind... doesn't it only tend to notice the
bit beyond 64gig (in terms of size).

80 * 1000^3/1024^3 = ~75GB. 75GB-64GB ~10GB, so that makes sense.

Where have you been the last few years?
Everybody does the drive setup from the xp boot cd.
That file you downloaded was for W98, not XP!
Forget about fdisk from floppies, that's history!
Don't forget to go NTFS for drives over 32 gigs!
It was a learning curve to adjust, but so much faster and simpler
with XP, I did go back to full ntfs formats for the system
partition, data gets the quick.

I have downloaded the patch that I was told to. Now what am I to do with
this? I am working on this machine away from home and I want to be
prepeared before I get there. I tried just opening it to see the contenets
of it, however Im running xp so it wont open. Is this a completely new boot
disk file?, Will I still require anything else to fdisk/partition, and
format this drive?

actually yeah thats what I would do, as thats whats gonna be going on the
machine. actually forgot aboutt that. When i first put it together my xp cd
was not handy, and the machine was wanted anyway they could have it, so
thats why I used the 98 boot cd. Thanks alot, comments and help appreciated
