are you using onboard sound or a pci soundcard? If the former, sounds like
your bios has reset and turned off onboard sound possible. Check your bios.

Hello All,

CVame home from work today and turned on the computer screen and
pressed a few keys on the keyboard as I normally do to come out of
screan saver (I leave it on during the day for various tasks).

Now somehow, the computer beeped and rebooted, strange but "windows",
it had been on for 4 days straight. The problem I have appeared when
it rebooted, no sound out of any outpus, no sound on the mic in.

After a hour of testing here is what I have found.
speakers ok (added an old sound card for testing)
windows reconises all sound card related items (reports them working
OK)
bios has sound card enabled (was out of ideas at the time

Does anyone have any ideas for me to try, I can not record sounds, I
can not play sounds but all software appear as if it is working
correctly.

Have I just been unlucky or did the new mic stuff out the sound output
with some feedback loop that I can not hear?

Any and all help would be useful.

Andrew,
I wouldn't fool with the BIOS yet! Is is possible that Windows Update
is set in Auto Mode and has downloaded some funky Audio Drivers? If it
did, your key sequence may have triggered a yes response to a reboot
inquiry and the new driver kicked in after reboot. Have you tried
removing all audio software and the PCI card, then installed some known
good nVidia audio drivers? Just a shot!

currently using a PCI card while trying to get the onboard to work
again,

The bios has the on board audio set to "Auto" (other option disabled)

I might try to to a load defaults at the next reboot and try that
(next a re flashing of the bios if that fails)

Hello Rob,

I had not considered that option as I do not have auto update and
windows reported all hardware working correctly (no question marks on
the hardware control), but I'll give it a try (only reboot normally
once every 3-4 days anyway)
