Hi,

After several fresh install of XP, with or without installing the
buggy NVIDIA IDE drivers, I'm stuck with the following problem :

If I start (or reboot) the computer with an Audio CD (no problem with
data CD) in the Plextor drive then this drive isn't available in XP
(both in the explorer and in the devices manager). I can't find it if
I do a new hardware detection either. To have the DVD drive available,
I must restart the computer after having removed the Audio CD from the
drive.
I think the problem is related to incompatibilities between the MB and
the drive (not XP) because if I leave the drive open during the IDE
devices detection (POST sequence) and close it (with the Audio CD
inside) after the detection is done, then everything works.

Could someone with this same setup tell me if I'm alone with this
problem ?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like there is only a V1 firmware, perhaps it's still buggy, how long
has this drive been selling?

There is however, mention that it is a Pioneer DVD-121:

There's a 1.02 and 1.04

Oh, these are RPC1 firmwares that have generally been hacked that way, I've
never had problems with these, I use them 'cos it's the easiest way to find
updated firmware with the added bonus of region free.

I already loaded the rpc1 firmware from this website. In fact, my
problem could come from this rpc1 firmware... Now, I'm trying to find
the original Plextor firmware to be sure.

Yes but I prefer not to load a Pioneer firmware in a Plextor drive
(even a Pioneer OEM one). We never know...

Thanks for your help.

Easy... Plextor supply firmware, I thought... just not for DVD drives, it
seems. Hmm.

Fair enough.

Ok, I think the problem comes from the motherboard and need an
investigation of ASUS. I changed the order of my boot devices in the
bios from
1->DVD / 2->HDD
to
1->HDD / 2->DVD
and it works !! The DVD drive is available in XP !
So I think the IDE controller of the M/B is disturbed when it tries to
boot on an Audio CD.
I hope ASUS guys will work on a new bios to correct this problem ;-)

mmmm... The more I use this setup, the more I find it strange... I
used Exact Audio Copy intensively today and had to reboot after a
crash so, to avoid the "Audio CD problem" I open the tray during the
POST sequence and... the cooputer freezed at the IDE devices
detection. Closing the tray had no effect and doing a reset also
freezed at the IDE devices detection. I had to completely turn off the
computer and restart to be able to pass the POST sequence. Don't know
if I should change the M/B, the drive, or both of them :(

My old DVD/CDwriter would hang on boot if the draw was out - my new Sony
DVD/DVDRW don't.

The firmware on a CD drive can adversely affect your other drives by locking
the bus when they are waiting to spin up or whatever - badly behaving drives
can cause all sorts of problems
