Hi all

I am thinking of getting this board and would like your opinions of the
onboard sound. I currently have a SoundBlaster Live! Value card in an
A7V333. Would the Live card be better in the new board or would the onboard
sound be more of a match now that it has onboard Dolby Digital coding as
well?

Matt

Hi Matt,

I just bought one of these boards on Friday, and the onboard sound sounds
just as good to me as my SB Live -- I had them both hooked up playing the
same thing today to compare, and I couldn't tell the difference. The only
thing I noticed was the onboard sound is a bit quiter than the Soundblaster
at full volume.

Hope this helps!

Thanks guys

Well That's made up my mind then. I can now ditch this resource hungry
SBLive.

The onboard sound is better than a SBLive, it is comparable to a SB
Audigy.

Really? Is that just from your experience or is it actually higher spec
than the Live? I haven't checked, as you might have guessed :)

I wouldn't "ditch" it until you have heard it for yourself. I just
installed the same board into two different cases. The on-board sound
worked great in the first case. I then installed the board into its
permanent case and could not get ANY sound other than a hummm! Because
of the LONG time it took me to get this board working at all (turned
out to be a bad memory stick), I did not persue a solution
extensively. After checking all my settings and trying different
speakers and insuring I had the latest drivers, I gave up and put my
old SB Live card in. Works great and I ain't gonna f*&$ with it.

The board is performing as expected with that one exception. However,
if you check the threads in this group you will find a mixed bag of
"sound" experiences. For some, the sound works, great, others have no
sound, and still others experience pops & hisses. Some folks resolved
their issues others did not or could not.

So... hold on to that card for now.

Hi Mort,
Watch out for windows update:-/ Its got an Nvidia driver dated late last
year that doent work with the A7n8x-dlx, at least not mine:-( Lost all sound
after it got installed on autoupdate [win2kpro & XP] So I've disbabled
autoupdate:-) Restored the drivers from Asus and sound is ok...

Cheers,
RD

Yeah, I know what you mean. I had the same thing happen to me for a
LAN driver on my previous MB. Installed the Win Update driver and
could no longer connect to the net! After I rolled back the driver
(BTW, WinXP rollbacks do work nicely), everything was back in order
and working. Never did use Auto-update and never will. I do run
"Update" frequently but when I find an update in the drivers section I
check other sources first!

Driver updates in Windows Update are generally out of date anyway. WIn
Update still keeps telling me to instal Creative drivers for my Live card
that are dated July 2002 even thought there was a later driver on the
creative site. I always go to the manufacturers or the chipset maker for
latest drivers.
