That would be slight overkill :) 1 piece of crossover cable is enough.

Looking at the header on his message, he is using ADSL and has a
ADSL modem.

This is probably what he has now:

------ Ethernet -------------
| ADSL |-------------| Computer #1 |
------ -------------

By adding a second network card to Computer #1, and using the ICS
(Internet connection sharing) routing software in that computer,
you can connect a second computer. A crossover cable would be needed
to connect Computer #1 to Computer #2. When Computer #1 is shut down,
Computer #2 loses internet service.

------ Ethernet ------------- Ethernet -------------
| ADSL |-------------| Computer #1 |------------| Computer #2 |
------ ------------- Crossover -------------

If you buy a router, it can terminate the PPPOE protocol that
currently terminates in some software Sympatico made you install.
With the router, your computer will think it is on an ordinary
LAN. Computer #1 and computer #2 can be turned off without affecting
one another. This is the configuration I use.

------ Ethernet --------- Ethernet -------------
| ADSL |-------------| Router |------------| Computer #1 |
------ --------- -------------
|
| Ethernet -------------
--------------| Computer #2 |
-------------

I can see a D-Link router for $70 CA$ for sale at staples.ca, so
it is more expensive than a cheap Ethernet card for $15 from
the bargain bin.

Paul

By adding a second network card to Computer #1, <snip>

Shouldn't need to because he's got two network points on his motherboard.
