A7N8X Do I need to format HD with new MB?

Will this MB pick up a HD which already has Win XP on it along with
all my programs. I tried already and it just wont start, it goes so
far and even with 'Safe Mode' it will reset the computer. No problem
to bring up and operate a HD with Win 98 on it.

I see lots of posts about HD/WinXP problems but none refer to this.

Thanks...John

anytime you install something as important as a new motherboard it is
recommended to do a fresh install to prevent old drivers from interfering
with new drivers needed to run the new hardware. The only exception i have
found is if the chipsets are from the same manufacturer (ie both boards were
VIA chipsets). But i always install fresh (saves time in the long run and
ensures a system that is running its best).

you may be able to do a repair installation of XP.

I have exactly the same mobo as you, I made my system update yesterday from
a VIA chipset based mobo, and I preserved all programs I had, but :

You will need to boot up your system from WINDOWS XP SETUP - CDROM

There is an option to recover your Windows XP, you don't need to format your
HD, but after you recover the WinXP you must install the drivers that came
along with your new mobo - nvidea drivers.

your XP install has the old drivers registered for your hard drive
controller. when you put it in the new board, it can only get so far with
loading and fails. someone mentioned that you may be able to do some
updates using the XP cd.

You must, and always should, do a clean install. Don't bother with the
XP CD "Repair" option, which is stopgap and half-assed.

i usually do a clean install with a motherboard replacement, but if
you START a dirty install (using yer old mb), wait for the system to
reboot, shutting it off right before it restarts, THEN swapping mb's,
etc.... when the system comes back on it will then find the 'newly'
installed hardware. you will have to do all of yer updates again. but,
to say it again, i do prefer a clean install...

XP has the activation system and doesn't like MB changes, it thinks you are
installing it on another computer. Also if you do a major chipset change the
OS doesn't like that either. You may just have to bite the bullet and
reinstall your OS.

I have never reformatted when I have switched mobos and I have had
zero problems. You should uninstall the old motherboard drivers but it
will work fine without doing that. I don't know about XP but with 98se
I boot in safe mode and remove all old motherboard devices and let the
system detect the new. Works every time.

That is extraordinarily poor advice.

He asked and I told him what works for me. Troll.
Sometimes the move from one motherboard to another is so radicle that
stronger measures are required. I recently moved a HD from a TUSL2-C to
a P4PE-BP and needed to run the XP setup over but rather than run a
completely new install I selected to repair and all my apps were saved.
I had to reactivate my product but that was no big deal. It worked out
just fine.

Depends
When I upgraded from an MSI to the A7n8x there were to many
differences for the system to boot (old and wrong drivers for MB chip
set etc etc) and had to do complete re install of XP.

However I have upgraded other MB's with no problems.

Will you maybe should do a clean install it isn't always needed and I
have done some that worked fine without a complete reinstall of XP.

What "works" for you is a bad idea. In fact, it's worse than bad. If
reinstalling the OS is such a chore then go halfway and do a repair.
But simply swapping motherboards and then trying to weed out everything
manually is stupid. Your system will never be stable and the dozens of
ghost devices will cause all kinds of unpredictable behavior.

And that is "extraordinarily poor" and incorrect.

I have done many MB swaps that didn't need a reinstall and ran just as
stable and sometimes more stable than before the swap.

Old devices don't load if the device is gone and do nothing put take
up space on your HD.

Doing a repair install worked for me..especially after switching from a Via
chipset based board.
same problem...

Just have to delete one registry branch, HKLM/enum.

I agree. Some people are reinstall crazy!

Rubbish, he's totally correct.

Again, who cares ?
Just because something works FOR YOU, does NOT mean it's the right way to do
things !
