Which LAN adaptor performs better for web access / Multiplayer Games? I
see that one is 3com and the other Nvidia. Besides the chipset variance
does it matter at all ? Is one prone to more packet loss & higher ping
times than the other ?

I can't imagine there being much difference for web access. Even fast web
connections (at home at least) are only 1Mbps, the NICs are capable of
100Mbps, so they'll easily be handle wht you can throw at them. The delays
will be completely negligable within your machine (for example, most LANs
give a ping ~2ms and thats between two machines - the difference in delay
between the two devices will be approximately nothing :-).

So there's not much to choose in terms of performance, the biggest factor to
choose would be CPU utilisation, but again bandwidth is so low that it's
probably negligable, but I believe the nVidia wins that one.

I you can get one of them working ok
I mucked about for 3 days trying to get my router working through the
onboard LAN ports and in the end i bought a PCI Network card and it worked
no problem !

I don't have any problems with either of them. I use the NVidia one
all the time.

I also went with nVidia LAN. I find that my Cable modem upstream is slightly
faster with it, rather than the 3COM, but also if I have to reinstall
windows for some reason, the nvidia driver is part of the drivers for the
chipset, rather than a seperate driver.

The skinny on the street is this:

The Nvidia port sucks. I could go deeper, but it is all over the web for
this MoBo.

The 3Com port is much better, but you have to get the proper drivers from
the 3Com site. This is also all over the web.

A PCI card is a perfect alternative to either when both don't work.... and
often times peeps can't make them work.

If for some reason you need sources for this information, just reply and I
can support them.

Hmmmm must only be the Deluxe version then, have a non-dlx v2.0 here
connected to a DLink router that's been working just fine for over 5
months now.

Cheers,
Ed

I actually would like to see some supporting info on this. I was using the
3Com port the whole time I had this board, until my most recent clean
install. The speed #s, especially upstream are better with the nVidia port.
I was never getting more than 230Kbps up with the 3Com, now I consistently
get at least 247Kbps up and have gotten as high as 332Kbps with the nVidia.

What are you using to test the LAN speed? I have Sandra so I just tested
my LAN with that for the first time, if you know of something better
(and free) I'd like to try it too.

PC#1
A7N8X(non-dlx)/NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Controller (driver 3.1.3.0)
Optimized for Throughput (little faster then CPU setting)
Full Autonegotiation
LMHOSTS lookup disabled (NETBIOS over TCP/IP)

PC#2
Soyo K7VTApro(KT-133A)
Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC (driver 5.396.530.2001)
100 Full Mode
Receive Buffer Size 64K (max setting)
LMHOSTS lookup disabled (NETBIOS over TCP/IP)

PC1/PC2 are connected by a Dlink DI-604.

Sandra 2004 Standard - NetWork/LAN Benchmarks
PC1 to PC2 - 9880Kb/S
PC2 to PC1 - 9390Kb/S

Cheers,
Ed

I use the speed test at braodbandreports.com almost daily. The Sandra
network test almost never works for me because of software firewalls on all
my PCs. For some reason it automatically denies the packets.
