Hi,

Ive just replaced my floppy disk after the old one died. Now I have this
problem where the drive is is recognised by the 'whirring sound' prior to
post, but it will not boot to a floppy or be operational in windows.

The bios is configured to boot to a floppy first as it was with the pevious
drive. After posting it sits on a 'updating dmi pool' screen while it looks
for something in the floppy to boot to with the floppy light lit up. It
stays like this for a few seconds and then gives up and boots to windows.

Windows sees the floppy a: drive under file explorer, and under control
panel the floppy drive and the floppy drive controller are both seen without
any problems.

Trying to access a disk that I know has data on it within windows comes up
with a 'insert disk into a:' error. Ive tried other disks as well.

Ive swapped cables and this doesnt seem to be the problem.

The drive doesnt seem to be a problem as it is accessed but cant seem to
read data.

I havent changed any bios settings and Im 100% sure its plugged in
correctly.

Can someone please help?

Thanks in advance

"but it will not boot to a floppy"
You boot from a floppy, not to.
Middle or end connector connected to it?
Also disable Boot-up Floppy Seek in bios.

Ive got a cable with only two connectors, same one ive been using
previously. Also have a cable with three connectors, tired that with the end
connector (one with the fold in the cable).

Make sure it is connected right way round on the drive as some floppy drives
have pin one on the opposite end to others.

This looks like a familiar problem to me. Make sure in the BIOS setting
for Legacy Diskette A that you have "3.5in.,1.44MB" selected and not one
of the other choices. Otherwise the drive is detected but will not read
any disks!

hi and thanks for the response.

the bios settings rmain the same and are unchanged from my previous floppy
drive. ie bios is set to legacy A 3.5" 1.44Mb and the floppy disk controller
in integrated peripherals is 'enabled'.

I cant explain this one.

I suspect maybe the floppy disk controller is stuffed. Is this common? Also
does "floppy disk controller" show up in the bios post screen with other
hardware? Because it doesnt on my a7n8x deluxe v2 1007.

thanks again

Have you tried toggling the BIOS settings? Not just check that it's right,
but run through the settings, remaining the same in the end, then saving?
Especially the Floppy Seek option.

Strangely, this has worked for me numerous times on many different ASUS
boards, from P2LB up.
