I just put in a Maxtor SATA 120 drive, when I try to install XP to it..it
goes to starting Windows and sits...when I try to boot to the CD-rom as if I
am going to do a fresh install on my ATA's..same thing..just hangs. I have
gone so far as to have 1 HD connected..1 CD rom..all periphs
disabled..factory defauts..changed Ram..underclocked..changed vid..still
hangs. But on my MSI rig..XP flies through the install. Is my board screwed?
Cause I am really starting to hate this board and am looking for answers I
can't seem to find. Any ideas or input would be greatly appreciated before I
go and buy another board.

A7n8x-Deluxe rev 2.0 bios 1007
Amd Barton 2500 @ 2165 mhz
OCZ PC3200EL 3x256(2-2-3-6)
Thermaltake Volcano11+ @ 2500 rpm
ATI9600XT
20 gig Maxtor Prim
30 gig Maxtor Slave
120 gig SATA Max disabled
Lite-On DVD-RW
LG 52
Enermax 465FM
All USB Enabled,Soundstorm Enabled,FW D/a,3 Com enabled

Is your Ram on Asus' "qualified vendors" list? If not, forget it, it will
never be stable. Had the same issue here with Infineon ram, crashed every
3-5 minutes. Changed the ram to Samsung approved by Asus and the board is
stable like hell.

You're overclocking your cpu. It should be 1833Mhz (11 x166). What FSB and
multiplier are you running? An FSB of 200 might be attainable with this
combo.

Also, the RAM is not Asus "approved". Have you tried another make? Or moving
the sticks around, even using just a single stick. Or slackening the
timings?

yes have had it running at 200FSB..9.5x200...but am running
175x12.5...running rock solid..and just switched to Uber Bios 1007 about 1/2
hr ago....higher performing yet...but did not solve my XP install
issue...might order Corsair Twinx 1024 -3200LL yet..but at almost $400
Can..hard to justify when I have almost that tied up in my OCZ ram. That is
an expensive test.

oh yes..tried Ram from My MSI rig...backed to optimal..tried FSB
100,133,166..tried single stick..2 sticks..different slots...have spent
about 7 hrs trying all sorts..short of ordering totally new Ram

His ram is fine. I've seen posts from lots of folks using it. I'm
using Mushkin Black Lvl2, and that isn't on the supported list.

Have you disabled everything that you don't use in the BIOS -Lan etc?
Disabled all peripherals?

DMA on? Anything showing up in the Event logs? Something like Bootvis might
highlight something unusual?

No, it does not include Crucial. But Crucial guarantee their RAM will work,
if go through their spec process.

gone right down to having on 1 hd, 1 cd-rom, vid and 1 stick ram..no periphs
running..just hangs. I need to format to clean this beast up..and would love
to put it all on my SATA..but I can't even get anything to go to my ATA's.I
know the disc works because I just redid my MSI rig about 2 weeks ago..have
even gone as far as to bring the Cd-rom from that unit to this one..just on
an off chance something did not read right

We assume you put the SATA drivers on a floppy and at the appriate time
pushed F6??
Or you dont even get that far??
peter

yes i did do that...I get to the "Starting Windows" screen..but it happens
whether I try to do my Sata or ATA drive..so it is just not a SATA issue..it
is either a M/B going bad or for whatever reason it has started to dislike
my RAM or ????...but I am looking for whatever information I can get..just
to start eliminating possibilities

If I was wanting to play safe (I am using TwinMOS), I would go for Crucial
"approved" RAM - on the basis that, if the RAM does not work properly, you
are more likely to get redress from Crucial's Customer Service department
than elsewhere.

I needed to install a adaptec ADA2940UW and two scsi drives to xfer my
OS to the new mobo/sys, and again, it just hangs. If I remove power from
the
drives I get "There is no scsi bios", so I know the board can see them.
In either case, I cannot reach the boot.ini screen. Maybe we just have to
wait for a bios upgrade. My old AS Rock has no trouble with the 2940UW.

I hope not..my old NT4 CD does not even recognize the drive..but that is
probably due to capacity barriers

I'm sure you are more experienced in these matters than me...and, not trying
to be difficult you understand..but if Asus do not include Crucial on their
approved lists for use with the Asus A7N8X-Delux board and a problem occurs
that MAY be associated with the Crucial memory surely this would be more
difficult to resolve with Asus won't it?

Yes, it probably would. But, instead of dealing with Asus, you can RMA
Crucial's RAM for a full refund, and purchase another brand - this time an
approved one, if so wish.

Having said that, I am not aware of any problems with Crucial RAM on this
mobo.
