Hi:

I have a couple of questions about the voice warnings that are
given at bootup, and also a question about page files.

Sometimes, not always, when I boot up, I get a warning: no CPU
installed.
Sometimes I get it once, sometimes I get it 3 times right in a
row.

Other times I get "system failed memory test"

Other times the computer boots up with no warning messages.

Here's my questions:

could the CPU be bad? how would I tell?

could the memory be bad?. Are there any tests to tell if it is?

Finally, when I run DxDiag.exe (Win98se), I get lots of info about
DirectX.
The first window for this program gives a bunch of system info.

One line says: Page File 0 Mb used 937Mb available

What are page files?
Could this indicate a problem?
If so, could this be related to a bad CPU or memory?

Thank you for reading this, and for any help or suggestions you
could give me.

Ensure your memory speed is the same as your processor, ei both
operating at 400 FSB, or whatever your setup. It can be a bit
confusing as the RAM is doubled, but the CPU's clock is multiplied in
other ways. Just use the info about Front Side Bus speed to determine.

If those items match, your RAM is probably bad. Try exchanging it for
a brand listed as compatible by ASUS. Non EDO non parity etc...

I occassionaly get 'sys failed mem test' msg, however it runs correctly. Not
overclocked and reccommended Corsair module - Rev2 , 2500 barton , 512mb
Corsair2700 -

The Voice POST chip is an self sufficient chip that does its thing
whether the processor is present or not. A couple of the tests at
power up are implemented by the Voice POST chip using a timer.
The timer is used, with the idea that if the processor crashes,
it won't be able to respond, and then the timer will eventually
trip and cause a Voice POST message to be issued.

Anything that prevents the CPU from executing the BIOS code that
goes into the Voice POST chip and clears the timer, will allow
a warning message to be emitted by the Voice POST chip. So, something
is preventing the BIOS code from running through that section of
code, in time to prevent the message.

Since the timer method is not fool-proof, as you've discovered, the
only value of the Voice POST messages, is if the motherboard dies
completely. Then, the Voice POST messages may be of help.

You haven't indicated any symptoms yet that suggest your system
has a serious problem. It is better to use programs like memtest86
or memtest86+, to test memory. Prime95 or other 100% load programs
to test the CPU. 3DMark in demo mode, to test the video card. Using
test programs that test specific things should help identify whether
your system is OK or not. Running benchmarks and comparing to other
user's benchmarks, may also be used as an indication that something
isn't right with your system.

Your favorite search engine should be able to provide info on pagefiles.

Hi:

Yes. I have an ATI Radeon All-in-Wonder 9000.

Exactly which problem do you have?

Mine are: -bad CPU warning
-system failed memory test warning
-DirectX 9.0a/b causes audio & video problems
-page files used = 0 Mb

Had the same problems try another driver disc.
Had a copy of my friend and reinstalles all the drivers and is working
properly.
Had 0 x agp and now 8 x agp and fastwrite on

So try another driver and see what happens.
