a7n8x Deluxe - strange DVD-writer problems

Last week I bought a Liteon LDW 811s DVD-writer. And I have a few problems
with it that seem to be computer related:

After connecting it, it was recognised by the BIOS and by windows XP. No
problem there. But the first time I tried to acces the drive, my PC crashed
and rebooted. That happened only one time, after that everything seemed
fine.
Now for the second problem. I tried to flash the BIOS of the DVD-writer, but
the flash utility told me that it didn't recognise a matching drive. So I
could not flash the BIOS. I was ready to return the drive to the store, but
decided to try and flash it in my spare computer. This is a 3 year old
machine. And with that computer I could flash the DVD-drive without a
problem.
When I re-installed it in my new computer, it got recognised by windows
again. And my PC crashed and rebooted again when I tried to acces the
DVD-drive. Only one time, afterwards: no problem. No problem but one: I
still can't flash the BIOS with this PC.

Any ideas on this? I'm using the latest BIOS for the motherboard, the latest
Nvidia drivers...and apart from these problems the computer has been running
fine. My DVD-rom drive and my CD-writer (also a liteon, no longer in my
computer) never gave any problems.

One other thing: a few weeks ago I connected another DVD-writer (a NEC
1300a). And it also crashed my machine. Only once....

I don't know if its related to your problem, but I use W2K Pro and
when I use the latest NVidia motherboard drivers I have to skip the
installaton of the IDE enhanced drivers otherwise my Liteon drive
doesn't work properly. The 2.45 drivers work fine, but I occasionally
have sound problems with them.

Hello!

I know this problem. I have the A7N8X DELUXE with latest bios and newest
nvidia drivers.
Those damn Nvidia IDE drivers have made my system crash sometimes.
I just installed my new Plextor 52/24/52 writer and my system crashed.

Just a word of advice. I have burned DVD's with Lite-on, Nec and Pioneer and
Plextor (tested some models)
Believe my if I say that only Pioneer and Plextor are brands you want to
buy. Nec ND-1300A is pure junk and the Lite-On also isn't a very good
writer.

Kind regards from Belgium

(misschien kon ik dit in het nederlands schrijven ;-))

verwijder dan wel de -NOSPAM-!

This may or may not fix your problem. I have a burner that the instrucitons
say to hook it up as the primary drive to flash the bios. Not sure why but
I do just in case. Never tried to flash it otherwise. If you have it
hooked up as Slave and not Master, you might try ans swap to see if that
makes a difference.

Hooking up a CD/DVD burner as Master is good practice in general.

You may be right there but I've always hooked mine as slave while my
CD/DVD(non burner) drive is Master.

So when I re-install the 3.13 drivers and skipp the enhanced IDE drivers
(which I have no doubt installed), it should be better?
Does de-installing the Nvidia drivers really remove them from the system?

Yes, apparently it's the IDE drivers. I'll try and re-install them without
the enhanced IDE drivers...

The NEC is my fathers... and yes, it's junk ;-) But the Liteon came out
first in a test of 9 recorders. And I always had good experiences with
Liteon. Plextor wasn't in that test, but is just too expensive for me.
(misschien kon ik dit in het nederlands schrijven ;-))
Ja, dat had zeker gekund ;-)

It is connected as master (the manual stresses that it should be connected
that way). I even disconnected the slave, but that didn't help with the
flashing problem.

I think when I had the problem, I uninstalled the 3.13's, went back to
2.45's, than a couple of weeks ago, thought I would try the 3.13's
again and just skipped the IDE drivers. All is working fine for me.

I cannot burn with the 3.13 IDE 2.0 driver installed at all. I use
Nero and have informed them of the problem and their engineers are
looking into it.

I did install freeware burning software and that did not work either.
I have done my best to inform Nvidia, but the only e-mail addy that I
could find was (e-mail address removed)

I have to use Nvidia's standard IDE driver, which is just MSofts
standard IDE driver with ATA 133 keys added.

Cheers,

I just re-installed the 3.13 drivers, this time skipping the IDE-SW driver.
I can now flash the BIOS, so I guess the problem is solved.
I did have some burning problems too: two times my computer just froze
during the burning proces. I hope that is solved too now...
