Hi all,

I have a new system which is deciding every so often to spontaneously reboot
once windows XP comes up. Never before. Once the windows OS loads, and the
drivers are loading (adding things to the system tray) it just stops, and
restarts.

Any ideas? Could this be an errant driver causing a problem? Every time
windows loads following the restart, I get a windows error message, and it
states that there was most likely a problem witin windows. (That is once I
submit the error to MSoft, and the web window with the explanation comes
up.)

I found in one case it was a SB-live causing the issue...but without an
specs how can we tell???..Specs..peripherals...etc..psu...

Scott, type this into your favorite search engine, and read up a bit on it.
It may be something else, or you may be fully aware of this issue -and have
already taken steps against it - but just in case.

"Remote Call Procedure"

Please post a follow-up.

Scott,

the other thing it might be is your power supply unit (PSU). I've seen this
kind of thing happen in the past with other people who post messages here.
If you're power supply is a generic model (i.e cheap, nasty and came with
your case) then this is the kind of thing that can happen.

http://firingsquad.com/guides/power_supply/default.asp

on page four of this little guide which I read the other day, there's a
small bit about half way down the page pointing to random reboots, etc. I
would suggest you replacing the PSU.

Hope this helps,

Xander

I have a nicer 350Watt Antec Power Supply. I will check this as well as the
last post and then re-post with anything I have found out. BTW, this group
has some seriously awesome posters. You guys are very helpful. Thanks!!

The other posters are correct to think about the power supply, but I would
also consider a bad module of RAM, this can cause spontaneous reboots,
screen suddenly going blank, etc.. Good Luck..

Maybe you could look in the Event Viewer and logs, to see if the
error managed to be recorded in there ? I think it is also possible
to set up your system so it blue screens, rather than rebooting immediately.
Then, by recording the info from the blue screen, you may be able to
trace down whether the error is the same every time (pointing to a
software defect) or is more random (pointing to failed hardware,
like some bad memory). I've seen some error messages posted in this
group, where the name of the module is included. That can help identify
the potential problem source.

Also, the thing Ron was referring to might be found as RPC or
remote procedure call. At least that is what it was called on
non-PC systems.

Go to System Properties => Advanced => Startup and Recovery Settings Tab =>
Uncheck 'Automatically Restart'. I believe a Win XP install defaults to
checked. This won't prevent the problem causing the reboot but should take
you to a BSOD instead which can sometimes give revealing information as to
the cause of the problem.

The power supply is one place to look. If the reboots occur when the
graphics engine turns on (ie screen resolution goes from generic VGA
to hi res) then the power supply is a definite culprit. That's what
happened to me.

I agree with the other posters that it's most likely a power supply issue,
but also do the following;

1. Check the hard disk for viruses.

2. Run msconfig, and untick all the items in the startup tab, and reboot a
few times; if all is well, add a new item. It might take a long time, but if
the problem is caused by something in there, you'll get it eventually.

HTH,

Pete.
