I installed the j-panle for spdif, and just connected the 3pin
connector onto the mobo (no others). When I started the machine
(on-board audio not yet enabled), I had a garbled image that went
blank (sound seemed ok) and I had to shutdown. Running WinXP.

I restarted with the spdif disconnected and the screen was at a very
high res, so I had to reduce it to see it properly, but after that
everything seemed ok.

Is this just a glitch or are the board and panel just not compatible?

Gary.

The A7N266 has a 2x3 header, with five pins on it, for SPDIF. This
kind of header has SPDIF-in and SPDIF-out.

SPDIF-in X X GND (the five pins on a SPDIF-in/out header )
+5 X (this is a 2x3 header, with a missing pin)
SPDIF-out X X GND (this is the header on a A7N266... )

I went looking for a J-Panel manual, and I cannot find one. Looking
at pictures of the J-Panel faceplate, it only has SPDIF-out on it.
That means the cable assembly will have a 1x4 connector, with only
three wires used on it. The 1x4 connector doesn't line up with the
2x3 header on your motherboard.

+5 X (the three pins on a SPDIF-out header )
(this is a 1x4 header, with a missing pin )
SPDIF-out X (this is the header used on a A7N266-VM...)
GND X

Can you clarify what the header looked like that you connected the
cable ? Do you know if there is a downloadable manual, so I can
see what the J-panel cables look like ?

I wouldn't have thought there would be anything that would line up
with a 1x4 connector on the A7N266. Only the chassis connector in
the lower right hand corner looks like it, but it isn't labelled
SPDIF. Perhaps you shorted something that had power on it - in which
case, inspect the SPDIF cable for heat damage.

I saw a 4pin header on the mobo with 3 pins on it (left middle of the
board near the edge and by the furthest pci slot) - the J-Panel has
two options for spdif - a 4 pin connector (only 3 conected) and
another larger connector. I used the 4 pin connector. The board has a
label next to the header which says spdif. That's how I remember it,
but I'll have to double check and see if I've made an error as you
suggest (quite likely considering the results, lol).

Thanks for you time - I'll see ehat I can find and let you know.

Cheers.

Gary.
