Basically what's happening is is the power light is lighting up on the
board itself but the machine does not power up.....

1) I had this board working in another tower. Switched it to an
identical tower and touched NO jumper pins, left alone.
2) I disconnected all PCI devices....Only thing left is my ATI AGP 7500
all in wonder and 1 primary HDrive.
3) I changed the power supply to a working one thinking I may have fried
the older one.....The old was working before.....and the replacement
also worked in another machine.
4) All my switches, power led, reset sw, etc. are all set the correct
way......+ - etc.......
5) Two sticks of memory are "identical" in speed and make.

I'm at a loss here, I've built machines before so this is not new to
me....except this issue....As far as I can tell the MBoard is mounted
properly and not touching the case in any wrong manner.......
I've had this board for years and it's the last of its kind as ya might
know so it's important to me....... ;0)

Any help is "MUCH" appreciated........

My new board, ASUS A8V-AMD64 Athlon Proc 4000+ IS KICK ASS though and
works GREAT.......Now if only I can get the 64bit version of windows
installed.....AYE YAH, that's another issue.........

Switch it back to the old tower to see if it works. If it does then the
power-on switch of the new case might be defected or it might have a short
some where, try this

Take this board off your new case, sit in in a cardboard, connect power to
see if it power up.
If it does then you have a short somewhere when mounting it to the case, try
use some of the rusty-brown paper washers with screws when mount the board
to the case.
Hope it helps,
M.

I can give this a try, probably the only thing I have not done as I'll
have to pull out my "new" board I just assembled to put the A7M
in.....OY!! The board I took out of the tower to place the A7M was
mounted in the exact same way.......I just don't get it.
I'm almost certain the power supply fried as I put it in another machine
that's working and it did not boot.......That machines good power supply
didn't boot the A7M at all........
It appears that more damage may have occured also......My AGP card along
with 3 Harddrives may have fried also, the drives don't boot at
all........What the hell are the odds of that?
Your cardboard idea sounds great, thank you I will give it a shot....

how about this... is the new power supply got enough umph...
check the rating and remember the 3 and 5 v lines need some serous
current.for dual athlons

if that is OK, pull the harddrive as well.. ( could be a shorted drive
cable)
next reseat the video card, ( you probably tried that)
try pulling cpu 1 and try to power on, (I once had a very confused bios that
caused something similar.)after I just installed cpu 1 and everything
worked.
next try one dimm at a time ( you probably tried that also)

when you pulled the board , did you loosen any caps?

Thank you John for your interest & reply............

Turns out the board is fried along with 3 Harddrives and my ATI 7500 All
In Wonder..........I confirmed this all in 4 seperate machine.....One
drive ia warrantied while the other 2 are not......It was a 20 & 80gig
so I'm not worried, the WD 160 I'll replace under warranty.........

Luckily my audio card and 2 controller cards are fine, the vid card
pisses me off though.....The original Powersupply that was attached when
I booted the A7M is fried also.........Geeeez, I'll tell ya, I built a
lot of machines and this is a first.........
The actual tower is fine as I placed another board in, had another
PSupply I thought wasn't working and it is.....He, He...Go
figure.........

Only thing I did not do is remove/reseat the CPU as you mentioned......I
need to also confirm if the CPU is fried but don't have another board to
test or equipment..........The board I'll toss but if the CPU is
good.......Hooooo hum.........Geeeeeez, I feel like a family member
died, this board was a horse as well as the last of the AMD
chipset.......

Thanks for your suggestions.............

I feel for you. I'm still using my A7M266, and it has been, as you
say, "a horse."

Congratulations on the successful troubleshooting, though. That must
have been a great deal of work!

Thanks Ron..........PROTECT & PRESERVE that board, it's
AWESOME.......BAWAAAH.....I need some tissues......;0)

Thanks for the reply though..........Yes, it was a bit of work, I now
just need to isolate that the CPU is still good......I'm generating
RMA's now for my screwed up products that are still covered.......Ho
hum........
My next step is to see if my insurance company will cover all.....SHIT,
9k worth of computer insurance should yield me something..... ;0)
