A7A266-E - Enabling HLT

Hi guys,

Have recently had a crack at a few software cooling utilities, none of
which seem to work with this motherboard (A7A266-E, 1011 bios, running
an 1800XP). Have tried both CPUIdle and Vcool with no decrease in idle
temp at all. Came across this group while doing a google search, to
find that that ASUS has ditched the HLT thing in bios revisions after
1003, and that a registry hack is required to get this going again -
guess this would explain why the cooling utilities/WinXP's default
idle thread are not bringing the temperature down while idling at all.

Anyone know what values I have to change in WPCREDIT with this
motherboard to enable HLT? I haven't tried the ones suggested for the
A7V or the A7M as they're quite different, from what I gather, trial
and error isn't exactly smart when fooling around with these settings.

Thanks,

John.

Hi John,

I was also looking recently at these cooling utilities, until I realized
that my motherboard (an A7A266) uses a ALI chipset. The A7V uses a VIA
chipset, I believe, and many of the utilities I looked at seemed to support
mainly the VIA chipsets, in addition to the HLT during idle.

Anyway, the other reason that I kind of gave up looking is that I read
somewhere that Win2K and XP with ACPI support, already do the HLT during
idle, i.e., these utilities wouldn't do anything that 2K/XP aren't already
doing.

Do you or does anyone else know if this is true or not true? Will any of
these utilities be effective (i.e., work) with the A266/A266-E?

Yeah, I've noticed that they're mostly geared towards VIA chipsets.
CPUIdle and Vcool (yet another cooling util) both claim to support the
ALi chipset though (at least partially, anyway), and I figured that
the only reason they'd do that is that there is some benefit to be
gained.

And yep, I've also come across the info re: 2K/XP having its own HLT
during Idle; have checked out quite a few forums though, and general
consensus seems to be that CPUIdle works far more efficiently than the
in-built HLT during Idle in 2k/XP. From what I can tell, we aren't
getting any benefit from the 2K/XP HLT during Idle anyway, as the
motherboard is ignoring the HLT with our later bioses.

So yeah, anyone come across a cooling utility that works with this
motherboard? If not, the original question still stands - anyone know
what registers/values need to be changed to re-enable HLT on the
A7A266/266-E?

Surely someone's had a crack at this, there's a lot (and I mean, A
LOT) of A7A owners on this forum from what I can tell. It's times like
these you wish you had a VIA mobo.
