I have been unable to configure my sound to enable 5.1 sound. By testing
each RCA output plug on the back panel I can tell that only the line out is
providing a signal. MY SPDIF card has no RCA outputs on it even though the
user's guide pictures it that way.
I think I need these outputs for digital sound but I have no means of
connecting to them . Am I missing an adpator or did they inlcude the wrong
module?
I'm lost. Any pointers truly appreciated.

The S/PDIF is an option to the board. If you have a Retail Boxed board,
it should show S/PDIF on the manufacture's label if it includes that
option and adapter. If it's like the one I bought, it has IEEE_1394
instead and therefore has that adapter and not the S/PDIF. There isn't
a means there to input a digital signal, however, you should be able to
get a S/PDIF type output from the yellow connector on the I/O Panel's
Audio section. Maybe a call to your Retailer or ASUS can get you an
adapter at any rate.
