P Peter R. Fletcher Jul 26, 2003 #2 8.5 X 11 (inches) is US Letter format. A4 is 210 X 297 mm, or approximately 8.27" X 11.69". A4 is therefore longer but narrower than Letter paper - its surface area is slightly greater, so in that sense it is "bigger".
