Be careful with this utility.. at least in the version I tried about a
year ago, there was no way to backup or restore original registry
settings.. Really, REALLY poor program design.

One of my biggest fears when installing things is that it will change registry associations especially for DefaultIcon. If this is done with Windows Installer then I usually have to grin and bare it or uninstall the application. Then I have to go through the registry and get everything back to normal as these applications that use the Windows Installer are notorius for leaving the registry in a very bad state after they are removed.

So I am more then willing to try this Xteq and Erunt as long as they do not change file asociations or at least give me the option to allow it to do that upon installation. Jim can you tell me if either of these applications do that? Thanks.

You know, I know there is a way to do this in Windows 2000 without an added application I am just unable to find it at the moment. I've done it before.

Hi George - I'm not sure just what Xteq does to effect that change, although
offhand I can't think why it would need to change an association - should
just affect the shell stuff, I would think, since that's what you would do
manually. Erunt/Erdnt doesn't change anything; it simply saves and restores
the registry.

If you want to check out Xteq's function to find out, what you might try is
using Erunt to make a copy of the Reg, then start up InCrtl5 and then make
the Xteq change and see what InCrtl5 shows as affected registry entries.
You can then immediately restore the Registry using Erdnt from the save you
made just before you started if you don't like the changes, so no harm/no
foul.

FWIW, if you don't want to fuss with all that, here's the JSI manual
procedure for adding a new entry:
http://www.jsiinc.com/subm/tip6200/rh6201.htm if you're comfortable
modifying the Registry directly. Remember to back up, of course (and I do
highly recommend Erunt/Erdnt for that).
