A virtual machine in Vista...

It will run... but some folks say that you are not supposed to use it on

No-one says you are not *supposed* to run VPC 2007 on Vista Home Premium...

Vista Home Premium isn't *officially supported* by Microsoft as a host OS
for VPC 2007 - all this means, in practical terms, is that Microsoft won't
support you if you have any issues running VPC 2007 on this host OS...

All reports indicate that it runs perfectly...
 
Hi. I want to run some older programs I've used in WinXP on my new Dell
Dimension E521 with Vista Home Premium by installing Virtual Machine. What
I've read so far seems inconclusive concerning whether VM will run on my
version. Does anyone know with certainty?

Virtual Machine, is there a specific app called that besides the Java
VM?
Do you mean Virtual PC or VM Ware?

VPC 2007 will run under Vista Home Premium, but it is not supported by
Microsoft, meaning if you have problems, they're not going to help
you. But it works, you'll get warning messages when installing.

VMWare Workstation 6 for Vista is still in Beta, but make no specific
requirements for a Vista OS.
 
I don't think there is much of a difference, just two different products.
VirtualPC 2007 is free, but I don't think VMware is, although I've never
tried it.

Frankly my knowledge in this area is sparse. What's the difference between
VM and VPC? Which is recommended in my situation?

I have an XPS600 with Vista Home Premium. I installed Virtual PC 2007
and then installed Windows XP Pro in a virtual machine. It works
fine, although XP isn't quite as fast as it was when ruuning alone.
Make sure that after you setup the XP machine you click on Actions and
install the VM additions.

Ignore the warnings that VPC isn't "supported" when you install it.
