A very easy problem

In a nutshell this is the problem. In cell B8 I have a
base figure for sales as at the end of Dec 2003. Cells C8
to N8 are completed on a month by month basis for Jan to
Dec 2004 respectively. What I want to show in cell O8 is
the sales growth/reduction year to date. i.e. When I
enter the sales for January in C8, I want O8 to calculate
C8-B8, when I enter the sales figure for February I want
the total in O8 to be replaced by D8-B8 and so on
throughout the year. I am sure there is a simple formula
to do it but I'm not clever enough to work it out! Thanks
for your help.

Hi Paul!

Use (e.g.)
C8-$B8

I've absolutely referenced column B allowing the row to "float". This
means that when you copy across the formula will continue to look in
column B. When you copy down, it will look in column B but at the roww
copied down to.

Problem solved (after changing the "/" for a "-"). The
principle was right though. Your help is very much
appreciated.
