In the past we've agreed to use such things as *SPAM* and O.T. in the
subject line to allow for filtering on the subject rather than the
user name. How about if floods of freeware had *FLOOD* in the subject
header? That character sequence is unique enough that filtering
messages that had it in the subject would not risk losing anything but
the flood. Also, other messages from the individuals posting the flood
could still be read.

I know there are various ways to do it in other readers like Gravity,
XNews, etc., but bear in mind that the majority of people
unfortunately still use OE to read usenet.

I don't like it.

hey hey...clarification here...I never really meant to *flood*
the group (although the posts thus cause some flooding
lately). I guess I will put in the subject as to tell why I
post them then. For example, some of the pieces I found can
be categoried as "new boy in town" or "Newly Seen", some of
them I posted because they are "Rarely See", some of them are
"Little Authors Site"; plus if what types of programs being
posted are also included in the subject line, altogether
should be pretty informative, then.

That has helped me to keep up somewhat with the postings. As I said in
another message, install status helps.

I think thats a good idea.Personally im not super hot on filtering and
suchlike so that would help me no end.I do like to check out all the freware
posted but would prefer it under one post rather than 20 , so i think that
yours is a good idea.I wouldnt filter it , but when i have a little more
time could digest those posts easier.

Note that I personally don't have a problem with floods. However, my
suggestion is intended to stop people from complaining by allowing
them to filter out floods if they for some reason don't like them.

How many posts would constitute a flood?

How many posts would constitute a flood?

Like pornography, you just know it when you see it.

Discussing programs that we use is one thing, but announcing all kinds
of programs that are not used by the posters is another. For the
latter, daily small doses are by far better than a 'flood' of posts.
It would help if the posts were thought out, such as text editors,
then AV, then anti-spyware, then...

I prefer to hear what people who have used program X have to say about
it myself. And when a similar program Z is released I like to hear
about it too. Given the entire alphabet from someone who hasn't used
any of them I pass.

Gordon seems to hit on a general topic, new releases from FreshMeat.
