I have an active notification that windows wants to install a single update.
Every time I try the installer runs but 5 minutes later I'm notified that the
same update is ready to install. I've rebooted several times.

How can I make the install happen. I seem to remember a way to update the
local history (in some text file) to stop this from happening.

Help!!??!!

I have the same problem man!I have installed that thing more then 2000 times
but every time it says that there are new updates to install.
I can't find help anywhere!

Clyde,

This solved my specific problem for:
"Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components (KB8322483)"

I did this:
Download MDAC 2.8 from Microsoft's website and install it. This newer
version will stop the continuous update prompt.

Ed.

Sometime it gets a hitch in it get along.

What I do when this happens, is I see what update that it is trying to
install, i.e. kbxxxxxxx, then I go to Microsoft downloads and look for tht
particular update and install it. This generally fixes it. Not sure what the
difference is, but I have done this on many computers and it works.

Hope this helps you.

I currently have this problem with
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB867801)

When I try and follow your suggestion, i.e. download and install it from
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...85-F19F-4B50-A75F-7636D8BEE576&displaylang=en>,
I'm told "This update requires Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack to
be installed.

However, I already have IE6 SP1 installed!

Now what?

Look in help and about and see if it shows the sp1 installed. It is possible
that sp1 didn't install correctly, or that your system restored to a state
that it needs to be re-installed. If that is the case, that is why it isn't
installing.

Thanks - yes, it's installed alright as I said, and I'm pretty sure it
isn't corrupted, but who knows? :-)

Here's a screenshot: <http://www.HerbEppel.de/Screenshots/IE6.png>

Should I try and reinstall IE6 SP1 anyway?

Yes, it won't hurt anything. You are getting the error that it thinks it
isn't installed. Re-installing it should fix the error.
What I would do first though is
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798/en-us
follow step 9, also stop BITS Service

Basically delete the Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder

Then re-do the install.

Same here, man! Someone else as well. See
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,18303288 thread. :( Note the
update is from 2004. It's very old. I think MS screwed up!

Thanks. It all sounds rather involved.

By the way, I can't find "Step 9" - did you mean "Method 9"?

In any case, it looks as if MS screwed up with this one, as suggested by
Ant, don't you think?

I think you might be right.

How do you intend to rectify the situation? By following "To Old To"'s
advice?

I think we will have to wait for MS to fix it or give us a workaround.
For now, we ignore it. :)

Good plan, although the Windows Update icon in the system tray is kind
of difficult to ignore.

I think for the time being I'll include in my (extensive) PS Tray
Factory 'hide list' - incidentally, I can thoroughly recommend this
software for hiding stubborn system tray icons - see

There is an unofficial fix:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...dude%40gmail.com&rnum=1&#doc_80270e4d27f5336e
or http://tinyurl.com/2cxe3t ... That worked but it's not official.
