Just got a "Maddog" DVD R/W and was surprised to find there was no
software to even play a DVD (it came with Nero 6).

Stuff I've tried: mediaplayer, Zoomvideo, DSPlayer, RadLights. None of
those work. I think I need a "filter" ?

I'm just trying to view a normal DVD that I own.

WinDVD 4, works just fine. Is there any freeware?

Thanks.

1. VLC : http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
I have used it in Linux, don't know how well it behaves in Windows.

2. Media Player Classic : http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/
People say it can play DVDs on its own. Since I have already
installed the commercial player that came with my DVD-ROM,
I cannot say. Try it out, it's lightweight.

3. Seeing that you already have Nero, does your version come with
NeroVision? There is a program there called ShowTime for playing
DVDs. You can give it a shot.

I solved my problem by using BlazeDVD. But, now I'm curious, what is
the coda codec pack?

It is a reasonably small codec pack (1.5mb or so) that contains (among other
things) Cyberlink's MPEG2 & AC3 decoder, that's the one PowerDVD uses
