A silly one?

I can't remember if I took some explicit action or just
fell into it, but the text below my desktop icons has
a transparent background, as desired. I use Windows
classic desktop and system tray. I recently built another
machine and noticed that the icon text had whatever
color was chosen via the desktop properties options.
How do I get the transparent background?

Right click desktop > Arrange icons by > uncheck "Lock Web items on desktop"
Right click My Computer > Properties > Advanced tab > Settings under
'Performance' >> check
"Use drop shadows for icon labels on desktop".

Thanks for the refresher course. The new machine install
of XP presumably sensed the limitations of the machines
hardware and set performance settings accordingly. At
least I'd like to give "install" that much credit. If I'm right
about that, it would further be explained by the fact that
most of the machines I put together these days are
state-of-the-art powerful and the settings would be set
accordingly... namely "drop shadows for icon labels"
enabled.
