The dead PSU I recently removed, has a whole loom of wiring (thicker in quality than the replacement's actually.) Should they just be binned along with the defunct unit? Or are they likely to be useful for connecting anything to anywhere? ... Just wondering:p

I wasn't planning to keep the actual PSU, but cutting off the wires - wondered whether they could be attached to anything else :D

Nope, they aren't much use really unless you plan on getting your soldering iron out ;) I'd just bin them :)

Our local Council is currently stepping-up it's recycling policy. Now we have even been given special little caddies for kitchen food waste; another large wheelie bin for other recyclables both of which will be collected weekly. Then the ordinary waste, which doesn't fit into either category, goes into yet another wheelie bin for fortnightly collection. So blame this for sparking my original question... the bin-police are operating around here

And here to!
Put things in the wrong bin & they do not take it and you get a letter from the council!!
All gone a bit OTT!

"Over 75% of waste electrical goods end up in landfill, where lead and other toxins contained in the electrical goods can cause soil and water contamination. "

"This can have a very harmful effect on natural habitat, wildlife and also human health. When situated near populated areas these toxins can cause problems to communities as their water and soil is polluted. "

The second link is the one that contains the important information.

I'd try to fix it personally, probably a capacitor that's blown and they is pretty cheap. I guess not many people have a use for old PC power supplies though. I converted mine into a bench top one with an adjustable 1.25 - 12V output at 1A as well as the normal fixed voltages

As for weighing in the copper, i found my el cheapo PSU had mainly steel wiring so you may find you only have a couple of £'s worth of copper

My view is that an old PSU is absolutely worthless and should be binned, in whatever way your local council allow for the best.

If they have a scrap metal container at the local tip it should go in there.

If they haven't, chuck it in the bin and to hell with these green policies, half of them don't work anyway.

There is an extremely small value for scrap metal in a computer PSU. Have you ever had an encounter with your average scrap metal dealer?

If you gave him a handful of carefully stripped copper wire he'd look at you as if you just escaped from Strangeways.

I do support green policies but some people become obsessed with it and go way over the top, like our local (Labour) councillors for a start. I can look over London now and see clear air. 15 years ago I looked at a thick yellowy fug.

Mother Earth has suffered countless indignities from homo sapiens for centuries and a million extreme climate changes, yet she still breathes easy.

We'll be gone before she will.

Anyhoo, PSU worth nowt :)

I'd throw the psu out and keep the cables for tie-ing(?) up prisoners etc lol....Only joking.
How is the new psu going, anyway???:)

It was only the cables I was wondering about to begin with  But as for the new PSU, it is fine, I feel very pleased with it, and the new graphics card too :thumb: It might be imagination, but I can't help thinking the PC is a tad speedier now  :D

Maybe the old psu power levels weren't what they should be, and now you're back on full power again.

How is the gaming now with the new graphics card.....does the game run quicker/crisper??
I'm gonna get me an xbox controller for me laptop and try a few pc games....

I can see a big difference Zed, the graphics seemed to be good previously, but since I installed the new card, they look amazing. I'm really pleased with it. I feel my games are running much more smoothly :thumb:

Hope your X-Box controller will work out well

A computer could run a little faster for changing the power supply.

Components need current to operate and if that current is limited it will take longer for them to function fully.

With lots of available current, they will run as they were intended to.
