I insert an OLE object using "create from file", and display it as an icon.
When I click on the icon , the object...a word document in this case is
displayed.
The problem occurs when I try to close the object...I get the error message
as worded in the subject box to this posting.

I have searched help and support and MSKB, but can't find anything about
what the OLE Server is or how to find it on my computer.

I am just wanting to insert the documents stored in "My Documents" into the
database I have created. Is the OLE something external to my computer? How do
I work around this? Confused!!

Thanks
Dermot

The menu's are not really part of Access or Word: they are
part of Office, Access and Word just fill in the details.

Access, Word, and probably the Office Menu System are all
OLE servers.

Your error (which I have never heard of either), probably
means that you should uninstall Office, then download
the Office Resource Kit and clean your PC, then re-install
Office.

Before you do that, you should try again using a new clean
database and a new clean document.

In this case, the OLEServer is probably Word.
While I don't recall having seen this particular wording, either, most of
the OLEServer errors I've seen have come from having too many instances of
the Server program open at the same time.
Word, for example, normally opens new documents inside any existing Word
window.
Using OLE, however, you can start a new instance of Word, separate from
any documents you may currently have open.
When it comes to closing them down, though, Windows can get confused.

So before you go re-installing, I'd suggest you
reboot your machine to clear any exisiting instances
try your Access program before you open Word for anything else.
If you still get the problem, you may indeed want to try re-installing.

Thanks David,
I did as you suggested but the problem persisted.
I had tried a repair on my office XP pro installation but that didn't make
any difference.
Uninstalling Office XP pro and reinstalling cured the problem. Fortunately I
did not need to redo my word documents, inserting them as they were from
their current location worked fine.

I found the XP resource Tools you mentioned and downloaded them form the
following link.........

http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/xp/appndx/appc00.htm

I didn't use them as I wasn't sure which tool you meant me to use? I notice
that there is an Excel cleanup tool but didn't see one for Access.....can you
explain what you meant for future reference...
Cheers

Hi MacDermott,
Thanks for your reply, I had posted this under different headings and wasn't
getting a response....I thought it was me!!!
I did in the end have to do an Office Xp reinstall and all worked well.
Thanks for you explanation of OLE Servers....it doesn't seem to be explained
any where else.
David in the posting above helped also.
Thanks

I didn't use them as I wasn't sure which tool you meant me to use? I
notice

Removal Wizard

Sometimes even uninstalling isn't enough: the ORKTool helps you
delete registry entries and shared files.

I did see that removal wizard, but because I saw the Excel one I thought
maybe there was a specific Access one......
Thanks for the info. I have the resource kit installed...hopefully I won't
need them, fingers crossed.

Best wishes
Dermot
