A+ on Linux

Since CompTIA is changing their pricing scheme starting 2011, I might
take the exam. I took a course, but it was, disappointedly, mostly
lecture -- and most memorably about how to pirate movies, the rest was a
bit dry. I was thinking of buying a book with accompanying CD, but,
since I don't run Windows, it's never a given that the software will run
from Linux WINE.

Any book suggestions, or websites? I've seen a few, but many are .exe's
for download, nothing really jumps out, although
http://www.test-king.com/ has been recomended.


I suppose I'll have to do something like:

Heathkit Certification Test Preparation System
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=4974

but there's no real guarantee that it will actually run. Any advice for
this Linux user?

They are also changing their certification so it expires. Below is an
e-mail that I got from them:

As a follow-up to our announcement in January, CompTIA is updating its
certification policy for CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA
Security+ certifications. Starting Jan. 1, 2011, individuals will need
to complete continuing education to maintain certification. Since
you're already certified - your certification status will not be
affected by the changes.


The new policy will only apply to candidates who:


Certify on or after Jan. 1, 2011

Certified prior to Jan. 1, 2011 and choose to enroll in the continuing
education program

So my old certs will survive. If you get them after 1/1/2011 then they
expire after 3 years. Renewing them means having to pay yet another
testing fee or proving you have maintained your proficiency by
participating in other events; however, there is an *annual* fee to keep
alive your 3-year cert ($25 for A+, $49 for Network+ or Security+). ISO
wants to validate the recipients of their certificates are current.

If you want the cert then you should consider testing and passing it
before 1/1/2011; otherwise, you'll be paying annually to keep it along
with having to pay or participate further to extend it.

As far as studying for the A+, I didn't have to do much. I already had
most of the experience working in hardware QA test and putting together
the test hosts in the alpha lab. I just got some books that focused on
the types of questions in the test. I found the brain dumps useless.
