A:\ not accessible Incorrect function

For the past two weeks I have been unable to access my A
Drive, (Floppy) F drive (CD-Rom) or G Drive (Zip Drive).
When I attempt to access these drives, I get a message
that says: Drive not accessible Incorrect function. I am
sure this is a common problem, but I cannot find the
solution. Windows 2000 professional, all updates
installed. Roxio is not on this machine. Any ideas?

Thank you in advance

Hello Mike,311755

Below are a few different ideas on this issue, if it looks like a rose and
smells like a rose in my experince it is a rose at least 75% of the time. I
know you have looked into the Roxio thing already but you may want to pursue
it a bit further before you go through the steps outlined lower in my post:

Step1 - 315350 "Incorrect Function" Error Message When You Access the CD-ROM
Drive, http://support.microsoft.com/?id=315350

Note on the above article: It has also been reported that this problem can
occur with older versions of Nero and InCD software by Ahead Software.
Consider visiting Add Remove programs and uninstalling anything that has to
do with CD-ROMs or Disk Drives.

Some other troubleshooting steps are outlined in this article they are not
entirely XP specific:

320553 CD-ROM Drive or DVD-ROM Drive Missing After You Install Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=320553

It is strange that you are having this problem with Floppy, ZIP and CD-ROM
all at once, this would make me think that their is a good chance that the
above articles are in fact not relevant to this issue.

Step2- This may require a more genric troubleshooting approach.

First go to Device Manager and see if anything there is marked with an
exclamation and verify these devices are showing up and not disabled.

If the problem is not in Device manager boot the computer to Safe Mode. In
Windows 2000 you should have floppy and CD access in safe mode. If the
problem does not occur in Safe Mode implement a clean-boot:

We want to implement the Clean-boot process using MSCONFIG to rule out 3rd
party software as the cause of this issue. MSCONFIG from XP can be used on a
Windows 2000 Pro or Server client.

Go to a Windows XP machine find the file called MSCONFIG.exe and copy it the
Winnt direcotry of your Windows 2000 computer.
Go to Start\Run type in Msconfig and press OK.
Go to the Startup tab.
Click on "Disable All"
Go to the Services Tab
Click on "Hide all Microsoft Services"
Uncheck the 3rd party services that are left
Press OK twice to reboot.

Once your computer is restarted see if the issue still occurs. If it still
does go to Msconfig and select Enable All on the startup tab.
If the issue does not occur go to the Startup tab and select items 4 at a
time or so with reboots in between to narrow down the exact item causing
your problem.

Step3 Repost if none of the above fixes your issue. Let us know the
following:

If the drives are recognized by the Disk Management console
If the computer will access the floppy disk when you reboot.
If you can drop to a command prompt and access any of these drives
If the drives are accessible via some applications or if you have found
alternate methods to access the drives.

Sorry for the long post, just some thoughts,

One more thing,

Flpydisk.sys is the built in Windows 2000 device driver for the floppy,
cdfs.sys is the built in driver for the CD-ROM, perhaps you can check the
versions of these files against a Win2K machine that has the same service
pack as you do?

I was hoping someone could update this problem. I too am running
Windows 2000 and suddenly my floppy drive, cd-rom, and cd-rw all
stopped working. The funny thing is I can still burn disks on the
cd-rw, but not read them in any other program (burn program is Nero 5).
Window recognizes that the drives are there, they come up in Windows
Explorer as A: floppy, D: Compact disk, and e: Compact disk. The cd
drives even start to spin up when a disk is inserted, but when you
click on the specific disk drive you get the dive not accessible,
incorrect function window that pops up.

At least the cd drives worked a couple of weeks ago when I installed
Norton Antivirus 2004, but I am scared to take off this program for
fear I cannot get it back on with the disk.

Any help would be appreciated.

thank you,
Mike

Try to boot to safe mode and remove the drives from device manager and
reboot to let them reinstall and redetect.

Some versions of Roxio EZ-CD Creator can cause this as well.

I found this solution on the web:

ACTION: When attempting to access Floppy or either CD drive

RESULT: Was unable to do so, getting incorrect function

CAUSE: This was caused by InCD's driver, BSUDF.sys

RESOLUTION: Uninstall InCD and contact Nero for an update that functions

Good luck, the last one looks the most promising.

I fixed this same problem (thanks to hints from this thread) on a
Win2000Pro system.
*I simply uninstalled InCD* (which is a component of Nero that allow
third party programs to treat the CDWriter as a normal hard disc).
I had tried a newer version of Nero, but this did not help, and th
drives were accessible in safe mode. So I figured on drivers, and i
seemed to me that this InCD could be the culprit.
Voila - I earned myself a 12 pack :)
