a newbie burning a cd

I am trying to burn a cd for the first time. My computer is new, an ISUS with
pentium iv and windows xp professional. I keep getting the message that
"device is not detected" yet I am pretty certain this computer does not need
an external device for downloading music (yes, we,re paying for it!)

Are you sure that your computer has a CD-R/W drive and not just a CD-ROM
drive?
 
What do you mean by,
