99% of all my Word files were destroyed while I was down loading HP digital
camera support soft-wear. The lost files were replaced with the "none sence"
internet files or other files in Spanish. My computer works very slow.
How can I recover my files? How can I get rid of the strange files?

Natalya,

You can do a system restore. If you are using XP HE click "Start" - "All
programs" - "Accessories" - "System Tools" - " System Restore". Brings up
System restore window click "Restore my computer to an earlier time" Scroll
through the dates on the Calendar and try and find a "System Checkpoint" .
They seem to be the most stable. Of course you should first do a virus scan
with updated definitions to make sure you isolate and quarantine the virus
maybe even get rid of it all together. I'm not an expert so you may want to
wait on other advice. Hope this helps.

What antivirus do you have installed? Name, version, and whether your
subscription is current.

If you do not have an av, start by running either Sysclean or Dave
Lipman's Multi-AV. Instructions and links to Sysclean are here:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Get Multi-AV here:
http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

After you've done the initial scanning, get and install a full-featured
av, update it, and do a thorough scan in Safe Mode. It would also be
smart to go through other malware removal steps outlined at the
Elephant Boy site link above.

If this work seems difficult - and there is no shame admitting that -
take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local
equivalent of BigStoreUSA).

To recover the files, restore from backups once the machine is known to
be clean.

If your Word documents were literally "destroyed" then only a restoration from backup media
will be your salvation. You do make backups of all your data - Right ?

If it a MS Word Macro virus, it may be curable.

Note that there are anti virus News Groups specifically for this type of discussion.

For non-viral malware...

Please download, install and update the following software...

Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

For viral malware...

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

It is a self-extracting ZIP file that contains the Kixtart Script Interpreter {
http://kixtart.org Kixtart is CareWare } 4 batch files, 6 Kixtart scripts, one Link
(.LNK) file, a PDF instruction file and two utilities; UNZIP.EXE and WGET.EXE. It will
simplify the process of using; Sophos, Trend, Kaspersky and McAfee Anti Virus Command
Line Scanners to remove viruses, Trojans and various other malware.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file.

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.
