Glen, In regards to your comment about ATI having trouble with OpenGL
drivers yesterday as there was sod all worth watching on the telly
till the evening-BBC 2-I did some google searching for any news sites
regarding this, and couldn't find anything concrete regarding driver
problems for the Radeon 9800XT.

So could you give me any url(s) to news sites about this please.

A friends of mine told me the nividia is withholding information as
nividia is wanting drivers code to be designed with nividia cards in
mind, and is sort of doing a sort of microsoft domination thing.

BTW FWIW, I won't be going for the sony moniter anymore, as i had a
talk with Jeffery my first older brother-there's 3 of us-and he said
that it was silly money, that moniter that Larc mentioned he said was
a good one, but it'd best stick to the one I was originally going to
get i.e. iiyama vision master pro 514, in the spec it says it's got a
20" [22.5" for the sony] view area a DiamondTron screen which he says
is flat and simply.co.uk has it for only £426.58 with vat and pp.

Note: Jeff has an iiyama 413-I think-17 inch and it's got a flat
screen, and he's going to up grade next year to a iiyama 454 19".

ATI has always had trouble with OpenGL drivers. Just search on *ATI OpenGL
problems*. So IMHO if OpenGL support is an important issue than this ATI
OpenGL driver issue should be considered. Matrox always has really bad
OpenGL drivers yet they make (made) some of the best 2D graphic cards for
use with PhotoShop. So you have to look at the applications you will be
using. Would you rather have a few faster frames in a game or solid OpenGL
support or great 2D color accuracy. I pointed this issue out because you
stated that 3Ds Max was one of your main applications. I mainly use
LightWave and other graphic programs with NVIDIA cards, very light game
playing if any. I'm not anti-ATI BTW, just pointing out this possible
*issue*.

DiamondTron (Mitsubishi) based moniters are great from what I read.

Quote from a knowledgeable hardware person in the LightWave newsgroup:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------
*ATI is OK for Lightwave, it will work. ...BUT, ATI's OpenGL drivers still
have several issues and missing functions as has been covered repeatedly
here and in other forums related to Messiah, Maya and others. ATI's OpenGL
doesn't support GL points in hardware, points in the graph editor tend to
shift or disappear and they run slow with ATI, even the very newest drivers.
Several plug-ins don't work on ATI cards because their dialog windows don't
display properly due to no GL overlay support on ATI... You can get by with
ATI if you just run Lightwave on its own with few 3rd-party plugins or
companion applications, most of the little issues with ATI are not
significant enough to disrupt a general workflow, but that doesn't work for
a lot of us. I have a handful of software that won't run on ATI, not even
the latest and greatest $550 9800 Pro w/256MB. They're not good for serious
graphics applications use - even ATI will admit to it and they claim the
reason they don't address this issue is because "it's a very small market"
and their primary focus is "gaming and consumer use".

ATI is great for games, some mid-level video work, imaging, and 3D as long
as you don't need to run any serious OpenGL. Ever try XSI on an ATI card?
Yuck.*

Right, thanks a lot for the update. Lightwave 7.5 is a little over a
grand, and I'll be getting that once I've learned the ropes from 3DSM
[I have version 2.5 {a mate gave it me a while ago with some other
software for a tenner} and I have the full set of Inside 3DSM 2.5
books in which to learn the package].

Understood, apart from MS Office XP, the main applications I'll have
is AutoCAD 14 and 3DSM ver 2.5, plus a friend gave me Bryce 4, and I
purchased the Macromedia web design suite plus a few other nice
packages on a cd for £14. The rest of my purchase's will be games.
DiamondTron (Mitsubishi) based moniters are great from what I read.

As for the iiyama screen, sounds good. Right, I'm just off to have a
look via google about those problems. Thanks again and for the other
post info.

Hmmm, but FireGL line cards I bet are not much use for game even
though they might be OK for 3DSM and AutoCAD 14 work. 6 of one half a
dozen of the other then. :-(
