Just picked up a new system running Vista 64 bit. This is my first
experience with Vista and I'm real disappointed at the speed, or should I
say, lack of. That's not what this post is about. What I'm experiencing
<hearing> is a series of knocks, as if someone is lightly knocking on a
door. I kid you not. This happens maybe twice every half hour. I checked
the default sound scheme and found nothing that matches it. Is it time for
a new hearing aid, brain enema, etc.?

Could be a wire being clipped by a fan blade maybe.. hard to tell..

If your hard disk is having problems you may hear a thunk or thunk-thunk as
the head homes to try to recover from an error.
Your system may have a utility to monitor the disks 'SMART' (hard disk
monitoring) reporting.

You could turn off/unplug your speakers to make sure of source of the sound.

I'd crank the volume and leave it for a bit until you hear the sound
again - if it's louder, it's software; if not, something's actually
clunking somewhere.

Not at the speed these fans are spinning. I swear it sounds like someone
knocking at a door.

Do you have an IM program running, like ICQ, AIM, Messenger? Those have
sound effects.
Also check the system sounds, to see if one of them is the culprit. Start -
Control Panel - Sound - Sounds

Been there, done that. Definitely coming from the speakers. It sounds like
AIM when someone comes online, but I have no gabbing programs installed.

Then it's definitely software. Way louder with the sound cranked up. This
is driving me nuts

Don't pick a fight with an old man.
If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

Try using msconfig to turn off startup items, and if that silences the
knock-knock then you can start adding things back. I suppose it could be a
service also but seems unlikely.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.'

Don't be concerned, it's only the Raven

I would go to my system sounds and see what is set to the knock-knock.wav
sound.
change it to something that is less annoying.

And yes, if I am too tired to fight, I shoot...

I found it! My cell phone was too close to the speakers. Whenever the
frequency changes it makes a knocking sound. Before I got this flat screen
monitor the old monitor would flicker a split second before I received an
incoming call. I guess this new system likes to knock.

Thanks to all for their help, and because I'm new to Vista, you may hear
from me again.

Answer the door.

My first month in Vistaville & I notice the system is set to 'click' as
different events are happening, even the background services events are
causing that notification sound, and I have so limited time beyond my
work & studies that I haven't gone into the system settings/sounds &
events part of this new controll panel setup-maybe your nemisis also..?

If you are getting "clicks" , the drive could be going .

Ah, my speakers are sensitive to cell phones, it is not the PC but the
speakers (cables) themselves...

interesting, I have seen the magnets in speakers distort monitors before,
but never had a cell phone close to the speakers make sounds.
