A linux inkjet that prints black even with empty color cartridge?

Hi . I plan to buy an inkjet printer; I almost was
convinced for the epson C84 but at
www.linuxprinting.org/epson-faq.html#free_software_support
I found that it doesn't print black if any color cartridge gets empty :

1.10 How do I print black without an installed color cartridge?

[as a general issue of the epson inkjets]
You cannot continue printing with one ink cartridge empty. Before printing,
replace the empty cartridge. This is not a feature of the GNU/Linux d
river, this
is is a designed behaviour with the Epson printers that cannot be c
hanged in
software.

I find this behavior pretty unfair;
is there presently a linux supported inkjet printer that
prints black even with some empty color cartridges?

thank you

Older Hewlett Packard printers for sure, eg, HP660C, and
probably the newer ones, too.

My Epson printer does this. I've found that taking the cartridge out and
putting it back in cons the printer into thinking it's got a new cartridge
(also handy when it claims you're out of ink, and you know damn well that
there's still some in there). This may or may not help you, but it's worth
a shot.

Steve.

Thanks. Is it a Stylus C84 ?

Which Deskjet is it?

All the DeskJet printers will print with an empty color cartridge.
Additionally, recent models such as the DeskJet 5550 or 5650 can operate with
only one cartridge (either color or black can be removed and the printer will
still print). HP supports Linux drivers, available at the following:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/hpinkjet/

I think I've seen some chip resetters for the epson printers. It basically
makes the printer think that you have a new ink cartridge. I'm going to have
to get one of them soon b/c I have the C82. (btw, it is unfair)

HP 695C doesnt have empty detectors. it just keeps going with empty
cartridges.

So if you only have red left, you can print red only.

So that avoids the problem of a printer deciding that cartridge is empty
too.
