I have been using one computer. It connects to the internet thru a D-Link
wireless card in my machine to a DSL modem(Zoom ADSL6) in the basement.
Everything works great.

I am now setting up a second machine. It is the same model mobo as the
first and both have on board gigabit ethernet RJ-45 ports/jacks. I have
connected a CAT5/6 cable between the two. I would like to be able to access
the internet from the new computer thru the old computer. I also have
Windows Live OneCare installed on the old machine. I thought I created a
workgroup called OFFICE on both machines and I'd be able to access the
machines from each other that way. But whenever I enable the network with
sharing on the new machine the wireless internet connectivity on the old
computer stops. I have XP installed on both machines.

How do I make my LAN operational?

How do I establish internet connectivity for my new machine on this LAN.
(i.e. thru the old computer that has the wireless card)?

How can I establish complete access to the new computer from the old
computer so that my mouse and keyboard operate on the new computer as if they
were directly attached to the new computer? Since they are both Windows XP
machines my hope is I can do this without the Synergy freeware.

I assume that you mean that you have a Model 5590CF Zoom X6 ADSL 2/2+
Modem w/ Wireless. This actually is a combination DSL modem and
wireless router.

You will be better off getting a wireless adapter for your second
computer and connecting directly to the router. You will then be able
to both access the Internet and, if desired, configure file and printer
sharing between the two computers. Each computer will be able to access
the Internet without regard to whether the other is powered on or off.

If you don't want to do that, then in the computer that has the existing
wireless adapter, establish a network bridge between the wireless
adapter and the ethernet adapter. See
http://practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/networkbridge.htm or look
up "network bridge" in Help & Support. In this configuration, the new
computer will not be able to access the Internet unless the old computer
is up and running.

As for getting your "mouse and keyboard [from the old computer to]
operate on the new computer as if they were directly attached to the new
computer," you can either buy a KVM switch to physically connect them to
both computers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KVM_switch) or if at least
one computer is XP Pro, enable Remote Desktop Connection between the two
machines.

Thanks. I do have the router modem you mention except mine is the "A"
version rather than "CF". I do have XP Pro on both machines. So I'll give
Remote Desktop Connection a try, otherwise Synergy. I'm going to try for the
Gb Ethernet NIC to Gb Ethernet NIC (Realtek RTL 8110 SC) direct cable
connection since the bandwidth is so much greater and large amounts of data
will be moving between the two. The 2nd(new) computer is auxiliary to the
first so it will never be used separately.
