When starting the computer it fails to load windows Vista. Then when booting
from the DVD and chosing the repair options it says that "A hard disk could
not be found" etc etc. How do I fix this as the repair options will not help
me any further??

Greg,

Repair depends on the version of Vista that you have. Take a look at the
following link. It has a complete guide for fixing these problems. You may
have to reinstall, depending on the problems you have. Find your version of
Vista a little down from the top left:

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/

Take your time and find the solution.

I am running Vista Business. I was sort of hoping that someone else had
encountered this problem and knew how to easily fix it. I will try and delve
my way around the site you gave me. Thanks.

You have to load a driver for your hard drive controller. On the screen
where it says it can't find a hard disk click on Load driver. You will need
the driver on a floppy disk, flash drive, CD, etc..

Depending on the brand of your computer you may have a CD with drivers on
it. Unless your computer came with Vista this is probably not the case. You
have to download the driver from the computer manufacturer's, motherboard
manufacturer's, or The HD controller chipset designer's web site.

What is the make and model of your computer and/or motherboard?

Let's be explicit here ... the driver you will need is for the HBA that
controls the disk drive, NOT for the disk drive. If you are trying to use
SATA then you need to find the proper SATA driver, or determine why the
driver you have went south.

Thankyou Kerry and Gary.

The system I have is a computer purchased from Landmark Computers in Melb.
Running Vista Business. The hard drive is a Seagate 250Gb 7200rpm 16Mb 3.5"
SATAII

The only CD/DVD's that I have received are the Vista DVD and the Office 2007
one's. I have checked out Seagates site and all they say is that a generic
hard drive driver will suffice. Well ok, how do I now get one of them? I
have spent the better part of all day yesterday trying to find it.

Please help if you can.

You already have them. They are disk.sys and partmgr.sys and they are part
and parcel of the OS; have been since NT4 and prior. What is your SATA
controller? THAT's the "driver" you need. You may have create a floppy or CD
to load when Vista presents, "Load Driver", and I think you only see that
when you boot from the Vista DVD. Also ... is this 32bit or 64bit Vista. If
64 bit, you absolutely MUST have the 64 bit driver for your SATA controller.
Disk.sys and partmgr.sys are already 64bit when installing the 64bit OS.

Did any documentation come with the computer. What is the make and model of
the motherboard? The hard drive controller is usually part of the circuitry
on the motherboard.

Well I do know that it appears to be a 32bit version (at least that is what
appears on the dvd cover of vista) - so if all I need is disk.sys and
partmgr.sys, why can't I download them or get them emailed to me from
someone??

Don't know what type of motherboard I have as I haven't received much
documentation and the whole machine is security taped so that if I take it
apart I will void my waranty. Which takes me to my next step - I think I
will just have to take it back to LMC and get them to fix it.

Thanks for your input - very much appreciated.

When you take it back insist on some documentation as to what is installed
in the computer. Those two files are not what you need. You need a driver
for the hard drive controller. There are a lot of possible hard drive
controllers. Without knowing the make and model of yours no one will be able
to help you.
