Hi, is anyone in the group using Sophos Anti-Virus program. Does it use as
much resources as Symantec and is it a good program

ken

thank you for your reply.

I have this new HP media center PC and with it came installed Symantec
Internet Security 2006 with a free 6 month usage, so am looking at replacing
with something better. Maybe not a suite but separate Antivirus and separate
Firewall program.

I have Sophos small business edition here for 3 PC's and 2 laptops (5
licences) that connect to the network. It actually seems to work out
cheaper per seat than Norton, even over 2 years.

Load it, and leave it to get on with it in the background. It does
automatic scans at a time you specify and updates itself, at intervals you
set. I have never had any resource issues, or had to disable it to load new
programs. All in all the best of the bunch IMHO. I don't think they do a
'consumer' edition though.

We have a site licence for it. It has a smaller footprint than
Symantec, and puts less garbage into the registry. It's pretty
good. The hourly updates are a plus.

Sophos, at least in the UK, don't do "private" versions, only
corporate stuff. The smallest package is the Small Business
Edition. I'm aware that some people just keep on re-downloading
an evaluation version, though.
One drawback to Sophos is that you have to update the entire
scan engine every quarter (minimum) or month (preferred). 30M
is a big chunk of bandwidth.

Sophos is primarily made for the corporate environment and is priced as
such. It's not a cost effective solution for the home user.
