"Security researchers on Tuesday detected hackers distributing software to
break into computers using flaws announced last week in some versions of
Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system.
The threat from this new vulnerability -- which already has drawn stern
warnings from the Homeland Security Department -- is remarkably similar to
one that allowed the Blaster virus to infect hundreds of thousands of
computers last month.

The discovery gives fresh impetus for tens of millions of Windows users --
inside corporations and in their homes -- to immediately apply a free
repairing patch from Microsoft. Homeland Security officials have warned that
attacks could result in a "significant impact" on the operation of the
Internet."

This time folks, please get ahead of the game. There's every reason to
believe that the "bad guys" will have learned from Blaster, and this next
one could well be worse. Please download and install the patch BEFORE this
next one hits. Do It NOW!

Hi Jim,

If it is as important to apply the patch, why doesn't Microsoft make a patch
that anyone may apply?

Have you ever tried to make your everyday work on a machine with no taskbar,
no start menu and no icons - nothing except the wallpaper? That's what I get
when I apply KB824146, and before that KB823980.

After weeks of hassle and several days lost in trying to apply various
solutions, neither Microsoft neither anyone else has been able to solve the
problem!

And I am sure the problem is in the 3 DLLs those patches install, because
when I replace them by the three old ones, all works fine again.

And no, I don't have any virus according to McAfee latest definitions, and I
disable the anti-virus before installing the patch. My Deskpro is like I
have bought it, I don't have any special configuration, I barely use
anything else than Office 2000, I have applied all SPs and security patches
as soon as they were available, and never had any problems with whatsoever
until these 2 anti-blaster patches!

Besides, it seems I am not the only one with this type of problem:

Do you have any suggestion?

Jim

The last two times that I applied upgrades, it killed my computer. In one
case, I ended up reinstalling Windows. I don't see much difference between
letting Microsoft kill my computer or some hacker.

So the question you need to ask yourself is why is you computer being
killed when you apply Microsoft updates? There are loads more people
out there who apply updates without problems. Only problem I ever had
was with a XP updated Q811493 which slowed down the computer. Ok,
Microsoft took their merry time (considering their cash-cow resources)
fixing the fault, but the fix didn't screw up the computer.

I properly realise now that my router (I do not allow a Windows OS raw
access to the Internet) will never stop logging worms trying to get
in.

Seems it's not "all" the fault of Microsoft after all.

Just my tuppnece worth. Ya know, free speech and the rest....

There are loads of people who apply the updates without problems. There are
also loads of people that have installed updates and had problems.

I have asked the question of why I am having problems, both of myself and
Microsoft. So far, I haven't learned much. All of the hardware and software
is on the approved list. I haven't spent a lot of time on it because it was
easier to stop trying to do the updates.
