A friend needs help: Printer cuts off right edge

Here is my friend's message to me:

John - Forgot to ask you. Our printer always cuts off the right hand
portion of everything, making things very hard to decipher. One has to
guess from context what the missing words and word parts are.

Yesterday was the first day for my own printer, and it does the same
thing. Any ideas for a fix? This is bullshit.

Looks like the last characters at the right edge are being cut off.
I've asked him for the make and model of the printers but haven't
received his response yet.

Anybody know what's going on on the basis of info provided so far?

Nothing wrong with the printer, it is just set up
wrong for the paper you use. The paper used is
probably narrower than that specified in the print
driver.For example, if your printer has 8 x 10
paper and you select 9 x 11 in the print driver
you could have missing letter depending on the
margins selected.

Depends on what you are printing. If you are printing web sites and you
have the paper size set at 8.5x11 what you describe will often happen.
Canon printers come with a web printing program that adjusts the data coming
off the web site to fit that size paper. It will also print very small
characters and graphics and print web sites in two columns to save paper.

For other printing tasks you have to set the paper size in the printer and
in the program from which you are printing (word processor, spreadsheet,
etc) to be the same size.
 
More info required. Under what circumstances is this cut off occurring?
Printed web pages? email? everything? prints, photos? Stuff printed as
letters in his word processing program? Does the text literally get cut
off due to the paper ending or is it cut off and there is still a
right-hand margin?

What operating system, what printer, and what interface is being used
between the computer and printer?

The reason I ask is because more than likely this is a matter of a wrong
setting in the driver, or an application.

Of course, maybe it is as simple as he just has the paper feed set in
the wrong place on the printer.
