I am working on the:

"The Table of Commercial Games to
Freeware Equivalents (or pretty close)" for my web site.

I'm not including simple, arcade-like games.

So far I have equivalents for:

Freelancer
Civilization II
SimCity

Can anyone else think of some other good ones?

Thanks,
http://www.vbmark.com/

Little Computer People (Also known as "Hal") for the C-64

I can't find a freeware equivalent for this. Looks cool though. If you
have a link please post it.

Although not arcade, Mah Jongg is usually popular.

There are a lot of commercial and freeware versions of Mah Jongg.

What I mean is a commercial game made by a single company, i.e.
Microsoft, Maxis, Fraxis, etc. and then one or more games made to be like
it.

Thanks though.

Mortál Szombat is a parody of the popular coin-up game, Mortal Kombat. It is
currently playable (maybe even enjoyable), although it is still under
development. Only two-player game is supported, single-player games against
computer opponent is not planned yet. There are currently 15 playable
characters, and several more in the making!

Mortál is currently available for Linux and Windows, requires a 400MHz CPU
and 64MB of RAM. Similarities between characters in the game and real people
are not coincidental

OpenMortal is free software! It is available for download, you can freely
use, modify and distribute it.

If you like OpenMortal, you can rate it or subscribe to it at the freshmeat
project page!

(Very nicely done, low cpu requirements, and FREE MK Parody...)

Posting your request in alt.comp.freeware.games will probably get you
more information. In *theory* we don't discuss games in this newsgroup
any more (ever since acf.games was created) - the serious gamers hang
out over there.

Here's a review from
http://free-game-downloads.mosw.com/abandonware/c64/games_j_l/little_computer_people.html
(a pay to download site)
:
"Little Computer People! The first EVER "virtual pet" game was made in 1985 and published by Activision. Their ad
campaign for this game was: "No wonder some of your games are not working! We've found little computer people living
in your commodore that block the computer and ask for more attention".

You will have to take care of your little computer man and his dog by giving them food, water to drink,
entertainment and other actions. This is a must have game, perfect when you want to relax and do nothing special."

I think I may have compoesed in Word then copied/pasted into XNews.

That's weird.

I thought I'd mention it, I've seen others do that before too.

Kind regards.

Did you use Word as your editor?

It's OE Express, with OEQuotefix - it adds those goofy smilies if you use
emoticons... ;) becomes that 666 smile.gif....

Only Micrososft would link 666 with smile.gif. What's wrong with them?

Well, we have Crack Attack, which directly corresponds to the SNES
game Tetris Attack.

Unfortunately, the Crack Attack website seems to be down -- usually
it's at http://www.aluminumangel.org/attack/

If anyone wants a copy of the game, I can temporarily upload it to my
site...
