a fix without having to re-install Vista?

Hi,

Cutting a long story short... purchased MS Flight Sim X - will not install -
phoned MS tech support who took control of my machine only to be told that
there is a problem with my ntdll.dll (possibly corrupt) yet this is the only
time I have had any problem. Tech guy advised re-installing vista. I really
do not
want to have to do that!

Can anyone think of a less sledgehammer-like approach to solving the
problem?

I have tried replacing my ntdll.dll with one from the recovery partition (an
earlier date-stamp was on it), uninstalling FSX and then re-installing but I
got exactly the same crash!

Any thoughts gratefully appreciated.

Hi Bill,

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

It's not possible to do what you suggest as the error (or crash rather)
occurs during the actual installation of the game - right at the very end in
fact, so I have no control over what happens.

Thanks and best wishes,

Jim

Try setting the compatibility to an earlier version of Windows.

Bill

Hi again Bill....

Do you think that if a wait a little while and download and install the new
Windows 7, that may solve the issue?

This is the exception code you have. SxS means side by side assembly.

//
// MessageId: STATUS_SXS_ASSEMBLY_NOT_FOUND
//
// MessageText:
//
// The referenced assembly is not installed on your system.
//
#define STATUS_SXS_ASSEMBLY_NOT_FOUND ((NTSTATUS)0xC0150004L)

PS Yours is the only report on the internet of such an error. Contact MS
Support for Flight Sim.

Hey "dot"

How do I contact MS Support for Flight Sim (specifically)?

Thanks for your input - very much appreciated

Try running the *installer* in compatibility mode.

Cool idea - I'll try to figure out how to do that pretty soon!
Thank you!

You're welcome. It's not original with me, but I'm glad to pass it
along.

Right click on the installer executable and select "Run as
administrator" in the menu that pops up. If you're installing from a CD
you'll have to find the actual installer there - it might be a .exe or
a .msi file.

My bad. I had a brainquake.

To use compatibility mode, right click on the file name, choose
Properties, and choose the Compatibility tab (it's the second one on my
computer). Choose an earlier version of Windows and hope.

If you're doing it from a CD, you might have a problem which you might
solve by copying the CD (or just the exe/msi file) to your hard drive
so that the installer becomes writable (I don't think that's necessary,
but I don't *know*).

Hey ****wit - Do you understand that you are not suppose to put your message
in the Subject line? Just FYI. Is that way over your mentally challenged
head? Just FYI.

Hey Gene...

Would you believe this??

I did exactly what you said and the game (FSX) installed this time without
crashing! It even put an icon on the desktop.... Eureka! I thought......

And now for the bad news.... when I tried to start it I got exactly the same
error pointing also to the exactly the same dll file - ntdll.dll.

Naturally I tried tried setting the compatibility of the core executable
fsx.exe to various different values but always the same error.

My hopes were temporarily lifted but now dashed :-(

Thank you for your help.

Jim

Hi CH..

I downloaded and attempted to install the latest video driver for my PC and
I got almost exactly the same error when I attempted to run the executable
as when I attempted to install the game, showing that the very same dll
seems to be at the root.

Here is a paste of the error report...... (the highlighting stars are mine)
