A few installation issues

I did a Vista Enterprise update of my Win XP Pro and now have the following
problems:
1- AVG anti spyware does not work but this was not signalled during the
installation Vista pre-check.
2- The Norton Firewall 2006 does not work (known) and I subsequently removed
it from Vista manually after the Vista installation.
After the uninstall of Norton I still get a warning that this program has
been blocked every time I start up Vista.
Questions:
a- Is AVG anti spyware not compatble with Vista. I could not find any
reference to that on the AVG website and the Vista update advisor failed to
spot a problem.
b- How do I get rid of these irritating Vista warnings about the Norton
Firewall even after removing the program. (In XP, I was able to manually
clean up the register with regedit, but this facility is missing in Vista)

Your comments will be appreciated.

Hi James,

You should have read the ReadMe file before doing the upgrade. It cautions
about uninstalling any anti-virus or anti-spyware software prior to the
installation. However, hindsight isn't going to help you at this point.

Regarding the Firewall and Spyware software: Both of these are built into
Vista's operating system, and it's best to go with that. Windows Defender is
the anti-spyware software, and it is also responsible for other software
monitoring as well. Even if you add other anti-spyware software, you should
leave Windows Defender alone, since there are several other services
dependent upon it.

I believe that after installation, you may install any anti-virus software
you want. You might even be able to install your Norton Firewall and AVG
anti-spyware software for whatever reason, once you can get all trace of the
pre-existing software off of the machine. If you really want to do this,
check the web sites of the vendors.

The AVG website offers a version of antispyware that is compatible with
Vista. If you can't get it through your installed version's upgrade module
maybe just install the new version clean? Regarding the warning you
continue to receive about the Norton Firewall, sounds like there is still
something in the startup list. I'm using Vista Business and regedit is
available. If you don't have regedit run Msconfig so you can view the
startup list and disable the offending entry. To access the "Run" option
press "<windows key> R"
