Seems like my a drive activates when booting up with a
grind and light. Also when logging off the A drive
grinds and lights up and some times a message comes
up "Closing Program" and then the computor will power
down. Is this normal? How can I correct it?

Thank you,

Tom

This is a normal indicator. The attempted read should be
about a second (no longer). A good indication whether you
have a good floppy drive is if a known good floppy disk can
be read in "my computer" or "explorer". If you have repeated
problems with close of program dialogs, check which program
is trying to close. There may be a program interfering with it.

My A: drive does the same thing. The cause of
my "grinding, and flashing light", is my antivirus
program automatically attempting to scan drive A: during
startup and shutdown. When you or a program tries to
access an empty floppy drive, the drive will give a brief
grinding noise. Could this be it?

Hi, Tom.

You may have your computer's BIOS set to check the floppy drive each time
you boot up - which is probably entirely unnecessary these days. This is
not a Windows problem at all; you must read the hardware manual for your
specific make and model computer to see how to change it. Or post the name
of your computer here and somebody probably will recognize it and tell you
how to do it.

Another possibility is that some program that loads on Startup has
instructions to look for something on Drive A:. This same program may also
check Drive A: before Shutdown. Look to see what is in your Startup folder
by clicking Start | All Programs | Startup.

The A Drive is nomally your floppy drive. You can access it by: Start/My
Computer/right click the A icon/march on from there.
