I do a 'quick' scan nothing happens...but doing a 'full'
scan, it will be almost done scanning and it would stop on
file...C:\documentsandsetting\applicationdata\microsoft\templates\normal.dot
and run my A: drive. sometimes a few seconds and finishes scan but sometimes
it get stuck there and stops responding. hopefully microsoft will fix
this...it is a beta version!!!!!!!

the file it gets stuck on is not relavent because it gets stuck on any file
at the end of the full scan

I have a similar problem on my Dell Dimension Desktop. My quick scan accesses
hard drive and works fine. I request a full scan and get the same problem
you have. My A drive engages and makes an awful sound until I put a blanlk
disk in it. It then accesses the drive and then leaves it alone. I cannot
tell if WD is looking for stuff to scan or it just executes the test the A
drive subroutine like a boot sequence would. I came here today to see if
there is a fix to stop it from going to the A drive unless it is a custom
scan. I see no further posts to resolve issue.
Have you resolved? If so how?

my research shows me that it is a routine scan and its easier just to leave a
blank disk in. there should be an option to bybass. or why is it scanning a:
drive in the first place, i dont know..

I have a number of Dell PC's that I have recently installed Defender. I run a
full scan and get the "Buzzing A: drive". Only way round this problem is to
go device manager & disable the A: drive. The scan will continue w/o hanging
on the A: drive.

Not a good solution.

well....i just run the quick scan more often and full scan once in a while. I
just throw in a disk and that seems like the easiest solution.

WD hangs looking for a disk in drive A: as well. I can click on cancel all
day long, but until I stuff a blank disk in A: WD will not finish the scan,
nor will the error msg. go away. Under General Settings, Advanced Options, I
included A: under don't scan files or paths. That makes no difference at all.

I deinstalled Giant Anti Spy Ware due to daily error messages upon updating
definitions, and now find that its follow on software is just as bug ridden.
I've also gotten an occasional memory address error msg. as so many others
have, and it takes ages for it to remove spyware that it has found. And
finally, what a rat's maze of links and runaround to get GDI+ understood,
downloaded, unzipped, installed for WD to run in the first place.

I can't believe that this is the best MS can do. As a matter of fact, I'll
bet that if Steve Ballmer or Bill Gates had half a clue as to what this
furball is all about, they'd come down to that little programming dept. and
kick some serious butt.
