I recently acquired a used computer with an XP operating
system. The A drive is not being recognized. When I try
to set up the drive in the bios I get a message saying
FDC failure. I don't know what that means and I don't
know why the A drive isn't recognized. I tried hooking
up the A drive from my old computer it didn't work either
and it was working just fine in the old computer

FDC stands for Floppy Disk Controller. The drives you tried may be fine but
the electronics on the motherboard that read and write to the drive are
fried. The only sure cure is to replace the motherboard. You got less of a
bargain than you thought.

Looks like you have a Floppy Drive Controller failure. Not Good.
Possible solution. Get a LS-120 high capacity drive
It works off the IDE channel.
