Strange - Previously working and new floppy disks are now
being read as not formatted. Am I dealing with some kind
of virus?

Look for simple causes first, e.g. a marginal floppy
disk drive. You can easily confirm this by booting the
machine with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com.
If the disks work OK under Win98 then you can start
looking for causes inside Win2000.

Don't know if this will help, but I work a lot with IBM PC300PL which in the
600-1200 MHz range have a very strange floppy drive faceplate. Sometimes
it's pretty hard to get the disk in all the way, and if you don't push it in
just perfect, Windows will respond that the disk is not formatted. Try
ejecting and reinserting the diskette a couple of times and see if it works.

I am pretty certain this is a faulty floppy disk drive. they don't make them
like they used to - at about $40 retail is it any wonder! I just replaced a
3 yo one and it's the third in 5 PCs that I've fixed over the last 3 years.
